Weekly Bulletin

Bulletin Deadline: Monday, 12:00 Noon.
The Epiphany of the Lord
Arise, shine; for your light
has come.
Familiarity can make us overlook the details in
a Scripture passage.
We bring familiar imagery to our reading of the
Bible, imagery that hooks into our childhood, our celebration of favorite
seasons. The Christmas season, for example. In our
Christmas cards and art, pictures and pageants and hymns, we bring
Christ and his humble revelation into our cultures, homes, and hearts.
Along with our songs about wise men, however,
we have Matthew's Gospel account to wake us into a serious realization:
King Herod attempt to manipulate the Magi into telling him where the
child was. With our Christmas-season eyes, these three
ride into Bethlehem led by a star. A crisp, blue sky frames
the star, their gaze, and the awe we too find in the stable.
But their story has more tan a calm, clear night and a sense of
peace. They did bring their treasures, but their biggest gift
was leaving Herod behind.
We are invited to link Christ to another passage.
Watch carefully the timing in Isaiah's greeting
(60:1-2). First, he calls: Arise, shine; for the light has
come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. Next,
he warns: Darkness shall cover the earth. Then, right
away again: The Lord will rise upon you, and his glory will appear
over you.
The darkness part we know all too well.
Yet the first word of the prophet is to remind us of Light. We
are told to rise out of it. How could this happen? It
is because the Lord will rise. And so we will rise too.
Traditionally, the twelve days of Christmas are
over on Epiphany. Something is new now. Everything
is new now. The men Herod tried to use in his twisted plan
took a different way back.
Their passage by another road was anything but
familiar. Yet still they followed the Light.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
Freshness
a new year is moving in
just as surely as the winter
walks along in snowflakes
and I sit here wondering
in the breath of his bless
and the glance of his grace
I think about the year now gone
and how I’ve walked across it
(it grieves me some and joys me some)
and as the new year stretches
I wonder how I'll meet it
will I let his grace find me
and will I let him charm me
and will I let his truth possess me
and will I let him lead me
and will I take his love to heart
and fix my gaze on him
oh how I wonder with this heart of mine
so often gone astray
so often found in desert
so often hid in hills of wind and wild
I wonder how I’ll meet this year
and if I'll give myself the chance
to catch the breath of bless
and glance of his dear grace
to rise and walk from sinfulness
to come return and find him waiting
to reach and know that he can heal
to turn around and give up all
and let him be my treasure
a new year is moving in
just as surely as the winter
walks along in snowflakes
my God is moving in again
and just like winter snow
he breathes my life full freshness

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU
Thank you to those who helped with all the
various activities that took place over the Christmas holiday.
Thank you to the ushers, adult choir members, children choir members
and parents for getting them to all the practices, our collection
counters (we depend on them every week), to the decorating committee
(Kathy Heck, Chairman, her husband Randy and son Jeremy – Jane Phillips,
in charge of the flowers every week – Angie McCrady and her family
– Jack & Pat Frohnapfel – Andrea Phillips) for making the church look
so beautiful (your many hours of preparing where well worth it) to our
lectors, altar servers, bulletin folders and stuffers (extra work load
during Christmas). Its the behind the scenes people who make our
jobs easier.

St. Bernadette Parish -- Celebrating God's Gifts
Eucharistic Adoration Adorers Needed on
Wednesday, 1 am and 2 pm; Thursday, 9 am and 2 pm. Call

JESUS is here for YOU and for ALL
Have you drawn closer to Him in prayer, reflection,
Holy Communion and in your family celebration of Christmas? Are
you able to say more fervently the simple mercy prayer: "JESUS, I
TRUST IN YOU" ?
Yes, you are more than likely closer to Him because
of Christmas. And, this is His grace working in you, more than
your own efforts.
Now, comes the Epiphany test: Do you help others
to come closer to Him? The three Wise Men who came from the East
to pay homage to the Christ Child represent "the rest of the world"
coming to believe in JESUS. JESUS IS not just for His own Jewish
people. Indeed He said, "Go out to all the world and proclaim
the Good News" (Matthew 28).
Today, and this week, help someone else to come a
little closer to Him. Maybe it's simply a prayer you say for
a friend or family member, or maybe it's a word of encouragement,
which goes something like this: "Ask the LORD, and He'll help
you!" Let the LORD BE KNOWN. It's His World.
Fr. Walter
OUR VISITS TO THE
HOMEBOUND OR SHUT-INS
In bringing communion to the homebound the
minister of communion represents Christ and manifests faith and
charity on behalf of the whole community toward those who cannot
be present at the Eucharist. For the sick the reception of
communion is not only a privilege but also a sign of support and
concern shown by the Christian community for its members who are ill.
If you or a family member are homebound and
would like a minister of communion to come to your home, please call
the St. Bernadette Church office at 654-1893 and let us know.
It would be a privilege to be of service to you.
SPIRITUAL DIRECTION: FROM CHOAS INTO BALANCE
Has your life been hectic and pressured?
Do you yearn for a quieter way of life? Come to St. Bernadette's
Spiritual Life presentation: "From Choas into Balance" on
Thursday, January 15th at 7:00pm in the Mary Good Center
multi-purpose room. You can experience a group spiritual
direction session to help you find a calm and peaceful center.
True spiritual and psychological health and freedom begins only when
we put on the mind and heart of God.
PARISH HALL FLOOR PROJECT
In October, St. Bernadette Parish was awarded
a $5,000 grant from the Diocese to begin refurbishment of our
19-year-old parish hall floors.
On December 22nd, our in-house maintenance
staff, and a crew from Martin Painting Company (Columbus), began
the renovations of the floors in the entry hall, coat room and
restrooms of the parish hall. The work consisted of the
following steps:
1) remove all the
old tile
2) remove the old
adhesive
3) grind the floor
to a smooth surface
4) completely clean
the new surface in preparation for the Ceramic Carpet (a Sherwin
Williams product)
5) apply one coat
of clear sealer
6) apply a coat of
bonding resin
7) broadcast ceramic
beads (a sand-like substance)
8) allow to dry,
then repeat steps 6 & 7 two more times
9) sweep-off any
loose beads
10) apply 3 coats
of clear sealer
This 8 day process resulted in a beautiful,
maintenance free floor that will serve our needs for many years.
The $5,000 grant, plus a $1,200 donation from a generous
benefactor, covered the $6,200 cost of the project.
