The Epiphany of the Lord
A huge stage is built on the highest hill in town. Banks
of lights set it aglow to create a spectacular focus in the night. Sound
towers send the music and the voices from the stage out over a huge distance.
Crowds that would fill several stadiums surround the place. Who is
worth waiting in line for here? Who is worth traveling to see? Who
should be on the stage? A rock star? A world leader? A
pope? What would it be like to be in that crowd and take it all in? What
would it feel like to be on stage with the focus of all that attention?
Isaiah sees an event ahead where all the nations will pay
attention, where hearts will "throb and overflow." Neither land
nor sea can keep people away. Splendor and light are drawing travelers
to come. What sort of show could this be? Who is drawing all
this attention?
A simple house with a newborn is described in the Gospel
of Matthew. Christmas crèche scenes traditionally portray a very
humble place. Wood, straw, animals, and humble parents: these are
embedded in our image of where this child is discovered. Maybe as
the visitors got close they would have heard a baby crying. Maybe
they would have heard only quiet words between the new parents while the
child slept.
What would it be like to look in a window, to see the
small gathering crowded around the child? When they left the place,
the visitors had to keep quiet, hiding what they knew, leaving no path to
follow, sending no message about whom they had met.
We use the word epiphany to describe a sudden
appearance, a revelation. How can you tell where God will
show up?

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
Welcome to the New Year of 2008. Our life is a journey and
we are always on the road. Each time another January greets us we have
an opportunity to pause, to see where we have been, to notice how far we have
come, and to ponder how that journey has been for us. Each new year is
a time to clear our vision, to take stock of our resources to refresh our dreams
as we set out once more on the journey that is ours.
As we look back over the year, it is helpful to reflect
on challenges, blessings, and those moments that enriched, affirmed, tested,
discouraged or enlivened us. It is helpful to recall the people who may
have been part of those times or situations.
In light of this we pray the following blessings
together for each other, our loved ones and our parish.
May our inner vision be transformed so that we can see
more clearly our own journey with all humankind as a journey with all human
kind as a journey pf peace, hope and unity.
May you know God as your rock, your shelter, your
strength, your wing of comfort and support.
May we be ones with welcome in our smiles and hello
etched upon our hands, the hand we extend to everyone who blesses us with
their presence.
May the wellsprings of compassion flow deep within us
until we can taste the tears of our brothers and sisters.
May our lives this new year of 20089 be a living
legacy to our God.
God of this new year, we are walking into
mystery. Be love in us as we journey and may we welcome all who come
our way. Deepen our faith to see all life through your eyes. Fill
us with hope and abiding trust and a deep faith in You and your gracious love
for each of us. Amen.
Sr. Nancy, O.P.
A Giving Time "Thank You"
Thank you once again to all the members of St. Bernadette
Parish who helped make Christmas a time of joy for the people of Vinton
County. Your donations of new clothing, shoes, games and toys arrived
at the St. Francis Center in McArthur in time to help fill their "Santa's
Workshop." Thanks to Fr. Walter and Becky Hedges and her decorating
committee for providing space. Thanks also to everyone who helped sort,
store, and load, especially Toni Blanchard and Dr. Jim Merk. Thanks to
Pat Keaton for continued support. Phil Messerly and Ted Abbott braved
snowy weather and slick roads to deliver the gifts to McArthur and helped
unload there. Sr. Linda reported in her thank you note to our parish
that 671 children benefited from your willingness to share with the less
fortunate. They were able to provide clothing, gifts and wrapping
paper to every shopper for each child. As one parent stated, "without
[the Center], my children would not have Christmas." May God bless
you all abundantly in the New Year ahead.
