Weekly Bulletin
January 20, 2008
|
|
Bulletin Deadline: Monday, 12:00 Noon.
Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
I remember learning to drive. It was January, the
start of spring semester, and the teacher had us drive away from school and
head for the cornfields. We practiced steering down empty roads.
Short-cropped stalks stuck out of the snow, rows of dry shoots waiting for
spring. The cloudless blue sky, bright sun, and crisp, cold air made us
wide awake. The feel in the air fit the anticipation of being the next
one behind the wheel.
The Church calendar is entering ordinary time. Our
internal calendars are too. With a couple of weeks behind us, we are used
to a new year. he days will continue to lengthen, inching toward spring.
Now we can settle into a routine. We are back at work, back at
school. Going through the holidays is like going on a trip - it is great
to anticipate, plan, and have all the excitement. It is good to be back
to normal again too.
God teaches a lot through the ordinary. Regular
time is where we learn habits that get us through the surprises. Daily
practice time is where we create in our minds, bodies, and spirits the depths
that sharpen our insight. John the Baptist had time to reflect after
Jesus' baptism. He was asked about the experience at the river.
You can see things falling into place in his mind. He repeats
what happened. He recalls how first he was uncertain, and then he
understood. Now he is sure; he knows why he was there. He had
been led by the living God. It can take awhile for things to sink in,
to become part of our living.
God has an amazing line in Isaiah: "It is too light
a thing that you should be my servant...; I will give you as a light
to the nations." Do we dare believe God might take our ordinary
talents and light them up? He means for us to go down new roads.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
Our Lady of Lourdes! The veneration of Mary as Our
Lady of Lourdes arose first in popular devotion and later in the Church's
liturgy. Between February 11th and July 16th, 1858, Mary, the
Mother of Jesus, appeared 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous in a cave at
Massabielle, near her hometown of Lourdes, France.
Since 1876, Lourdes has become an international destination
for pilgrims to renew their faith and find healing in the waters of the
grotto's spring.
Lourdes is a memorial honoring the mystery of the
Immaculate Conception and not the apparitions.

Pro-Life Victories:
How grateful we need to be for every newborn
child. How grateful we need to be for every illness
overcome. How grateful we need to be to those who safeguard our
living environment and give our lives protection.
I deplore the abortion decision of the Supreme Court of
January 22, 1973. It needs to be overturned since it violates God's
natural law respecting the right to life for all.
May the Lord of Life help us love life.
A Big Thank You to Becky Hedges!
The beautiful Church decorations over recent years have
been designed and presented by Becky. She has had many helpers whom we
are also grateful.
Becky has chosen to give up her position as Church
Decorator because of her work at the Decorative Arts Center in Lancaster and
her work in assisting her mother.
Any parishioner interested in giving time and energy to
the work of leading the Church Decorating Committee is asked to speak to
Father Walter at 654-1893.
The Catholic Times: Our Diocesan Paper.
Bishop Frederick F. Campbell and Fr. James Walter are
happy that all registered parishioners are receiving The Catholic
Times. We encourage you to look at the paper and discuss the
articles at the dinner table. You might then pass The Times on to a
friend or neighbor – or take it to work and give it to a friend. We
can "spread the Gospel" in this way.

February Bloodmobile. The Red Cross
has asked us to host another bloodmobile on February 23 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in
the Parish Hall. Central Ohio uses 650 units of blood every day, for
transfusions for surgery, car and industrial accidents, chemotherapy patients
and blood disorders. Fairfield Medical Center alone uses over 7,000
units every year. In order to keep this valuable commodity available,
please consider donating blood. To volunteer to help at the mobile,
to provide food or donate blood, call Joyce Guenther at 740-974-5040 or joyceguenther@msn.com.
This is a great ministry for our Church to provide to the Central Ohio
community.
Hang Up the Phone When Driving. The
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that
driver-distraction causes 25% of all traffic accidents. One major
distraction can be talking on a cell phone. To be safe, hang up your
phone when driving. If you believe you must drive and talk at the same
time, be sure to know the laws of the state you're driving in; some states
do not allow talking on the phone while driving or only allow phone
conversations when using a hands-free device. Is your call worth an
accident?
Please pick up your Collection envelopes in the main entrance of the
Church next to the Statue of St. Bernadette by January 21. Any
envelopes left will be mailed.
Yoga Classes will begin Wed.,
January 30-March 19 in the Mary Good Center MPR. Call Mickey Hartung
at 740-987-7378 or earthshanti@scpwildblue.com.
Spiritual Direction. Are you aware
of the presence of God in your life? Do the events of your day remind
you of your connection with God? Spiritual Direction is a process which
may deepen your relationship with God. It involves a meeting once a
month for an hour with a Spiritual Director, for a donation. Please
call Donna Menigat at 687-0441 for more information.
