Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus was in his early thirties when he began his public ministry.   Before that, he did a lot of ordinary stuff for thirty years.   The Word of God lived thirty ordinary years.   Do we think of them as empty years?   The beauty of "ordinary time " is we can find God in the ordinary stuff.   The drawback of ordinary time is we spend it with ordinary people.   You know, the regular folks we've been looking at for years.   The ones whose flaws we know.   Boring people.   People like us.   The ones who are petty, who gossip, who hold grudges.   Ordinariness get really old.   That includes ordinary people, ordinary habits, ordinary places and routines, and the same ordinary face I keep seeing in the mirror each morning.
We tend to think of the early Church in idealized scenes with robed, bearded family men; wise, peaceful women; and smiling, scampering first-century Christian children living in perfect, grace-filled community.   That's how the early Church looks in the movies and the pictures.
I find tremendous comfort in Paul's letter to Corinth.   It turns out the members of his parish were as ordinary as ours.   They had rivalries.   They chose sides.   They could really choose sides; they got to name their cliques after the apostles!   We get stuck with more ordinary connections.   But it is clear to us, twenty centuries after the fact, that God was moving in the port city of Corinth.   God used that really annoying group to be the "great light" Isaiah wrote about.
But to get there, they had to hear Paul's advise, remember Christ crucified.   By baptism you are submerged in Christ.   When we come out of those waters, life is different.   We are not left with ordinary options any more.   Jesus' message is to change.   The kingdom of God is here.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy

Lourdes has become an immense popular Marian Shrine and one of the most visited places of pilgrimage in all Christendom, surpassing even the holy centers of Rome and Jerusalem.   Recent annual estimates show that six million pilgrims, both healthy and sick, seek the grotto in the Pyrenees each year.   They come for different reasons, from different parts of the globe, and from different walks of life.   These visitors discover more than just healing waters from which to drink and bathe.   They discern a deep faith, hope and charity that enables them to embrace their life more fully and return to it all the more strengthened.   Greater than the cures, apparitions and messages, this new perspective on life is the greatest miracle of all.

Invitations to all the women of St. Bernadette's.   Please mark your calendars:
February 21st:   "Feelings".   How to deal, communicate better, cope!
March 13th:   "Celebrate the Gift of Womanhood".   Who have been the women mentors in our lives?   Who have made an impact upon our own journeys?
April 17th:   "Happiness".   What is it?   Where does it exist?   Follow the bulletin weekly for more information with times and day.

Sr. Nancy, O.P.

We have all been blessed by God's carpenters and decorators.   The gifted skills of many parishioners have contributed to the recent beautification of our Parish Church.

      Special Thanks to:
-- Pat and David Shonk and Jerry Azbell for reconfiguring the Sanctuary steps
-- Todd Hedges for building the frames for the pictures of the Popes and our Bishop, and the statues
-- Becky Hedges and Terri Carpenter for being consultants on the renovations of our Church
-- Lisa Dennis for upholstering the celebrant's and deacon's chairs
-- Randy Heck for designing and building the new pedestal for the tabernacle of the Blessed Sacrament
-- an anonymous benefactor for providing the Brazilian walnut backboards for the Way of the Cross
