Weekly Bulletin
February 3, 2008

Bulletin Deadline:   Monday, 12:00 Noon.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Sermon on the Mount is demanding   We try to tame the Beatitudes.   We sing them in songs.   Even people who know little of the New testament know these words and admire the sentiments they express.   Blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn.   The meek and the hungry - there is hope for them.   These thoughts are so comforting!   The place they touch in any human heart is in the desire that, even when we seem lost, hanging on to a spark of hope does not make us complete fools.   But the next lines about "blessed ones" are sobering.   Who is merciful?   Who is clean of heart or a constant maker of peace?   It is easy to think of times we have failed.
Paul's letter to the Corinthians gives us hope.   Who is God working with there?   The apostle sizes things up - not many are wise, not many look successful to other Corinthians.   They look despised and insignificant.   This sounds like an easy group to join.   The problem is, joining them means admitting we are lost on our own.
Saying we are "lost on our own" has a certain pious religious feel.   Oh sure, we all need God's help.   Aren't we all sinners??   But something more blunt is being said here.   Joining this group means admitting we are losers.   We are not considered insignificant and unwise in some theoretical, vague sense.   Real people think we are stupid because of the Christ-rooted decisions we make.   We follow the Gospel instead of taking other ways of getting ahead.   We might not promoted or get credit for being clever.   We might makes less money or be judged "strange" because we hang around with strange people, people who don't fit.
Who really wants to be a loser?   Who wants to admit that?   Do we mean to admit we really need Jesus?

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy

Perhaps a final reflection is best summarized in the appearance of the Immaculate Virgin in a less-than-immaculate grotto to a child of lowly status and compromised health.   In this unique encounter, God speaks through His mother in a powerful way to meet us where we are in life, in the midst of our poverty and failures.   He comes to tell us that He loves us just as we are, with our successes but also with our wounds, our weaknesses, and our limitations.   Furthermore, He asks us to love and serve our fellow humankind in their physical and spiritual poverty.   To fully experience Lourdes, therefore – either in person or in prayer – we are invited not as tourists but as pilgrims prepared for true conversion.   In this unique encounter we will discover a literal font of faith, hope and charity to refresh and renew us all.

Sr. Nancy, O.P.

FROM THE DESK OF FATHER WALTER

Recruitment of Greeters/Ushers Needed.   We as a parish family owe respect and appreciation to our long serving ushers.   A group of them are facing growing health problems which denies them the opportunity to serve in the way they wish.
One way of showing appreciation is to step-up and serve in their stead.   No ministry should nor will be left undone.   We are family.   We care.   We respect and thank those who have served so well.
If you are "moved" to become an usher/greeter, please speak to those already serving at your Mass time.   Don't hesitate to give this ministry your attention and your commitment.
