Weekly Bulletin
February 10, 2008
|
|
Bulletin Deadline: Monday, 12:00 Noon.
First Sunday of Lent
With Lent we volunteer to come out in the
open and admit who we are. For forty days, we look at the fat that we
are dust. We set aside our favorite distractions, take on extra ways
of reflection, look honestly ay ourselves, and see what we are and what we are
not. This kind of attention can make us squirm.
What does Genesis' look at our beginnings offer
us? Things start off well. We are made in the image of God.
Man and woman are partners. They are naked - but this is not just about
being without clothes; they see themselves and each other for what they are.
They are naked and they are not ashamed.
What does the fall into sin look like? Our
temptation is to become something we are not: "When you eat of it your
eyes will be opened, and you will be like God..." What lie does
the tempter use? Don't be what God has made. Is that
really enough for you? Become like God.
Just for the record, what is the first official
decision the man and woman make after becoming as smart as God? They
make clothes for themselves out of leaves. They have a new kind of
naked and want to cover it. But... ever seen leaves when they have
been off the tree for a while? They don't sew up well. So
the man and woman hide.
Now what? God goes looking for these two. A
lot happens in the story, but notice the ending: God makes new outfits for
them out of more durable material. A deep caring comes through this
image of God as a clothes-maker. We may be fallen, but we have God's
own breath still in us and God's own plan for where we are headed next.
Jesus went through what we are going through. He
was tempted for forty days. What can we learn from his time in the
desert? What sort of power seduces us? What sort of hunger
invites us to grab a short cut? What sort of attention do we crave?

The Saint Bernadette Spirituality Network. The
group was formed from those who gathered last November on mind, body and
spirit. Individuals who attended indicated they wanted to learn
more about managing emotions, communication skills, relationships, acceptance
of others and growing in their faith life. February is often the month
focused on love and relationships. Positive emotions are often easier
to handle than the difficult ones of anger, irritations, disappointment, and
hurt. How do you manage those emotions? Would like to learn?
Thursday, February 21, at 7 p.m. in the
Mary Good Center Multi-Purpose Room, there will be a presentation on
understanding and managing feelings and how it may enhance your life and
relationships.
Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m. Speaker
Debbie Richey will share her extensive knowledge on the women of the Bible,
especially Ruth and Naomi.
Thursday, April 17 at 7 p.m. Making a
choice to focus your thoughts to propel you towards an optimistic, positive
outlook can contribute greatly toward a sense of well-being and happiness.
To all women and men of the parishes: come join us at
St. Bernadette Mary Good Center MPR for these evenings, make new friends,
learn and grow in your faith life.

FROM THE DESK OF FATHER WALTER
Plenary Indulgence available for Lourdes Anniversary Pilgrimage. In
order to receive the indulgence, one must participate in the Sacrament of
Penance and receive Holy Eucharist.
One must intend to receive the indulgence and in this
case come to the Church or to our Grotto and pray as a pilgrim. This
extra effort can be the sacrifice required as part of the condition to gain
the plenary indulgence. The three traditional prayers also need to be
said for the intentions of the Holy Father: the Our Father,
Hail Mary and the Glory Be. One needs also
to be completely detached from all sin. (See Catholic Times,
page 3, issue of February 3.)
Tentative Delivery Date for Church Organ, March 10. Thank
you to everyone who came forward with generous gifts to help St. Bernadette
Church purchase an organ. I have wanted an organ since I arrived
here. As of this time, we have received enough money to purchase and
install the organ. A most gracious thank you, I am sure, from those
who will benefit from the beautiful music our new organ will provide in the
years to come. Your previous pastors will be happy to know that the
Church will have organ accompaniment. We hope to have the organ, the
baby grand piano and other instruments ready for the Alleluias of
Easter.
Our Lady of Lourdes Celebration on February 11 at St. Bernadette Church.
Millions of pilgrims from around the world arrive each year in the small
village of Lourdes, France because of events that occurred there 150 years
ago. February 11, 1858 marked the first of eighteen times that a
beautiful lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary, appeared to a poor, sickly, 14
year old peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous. A miraculous spring
of healing waters, which began as a trickle during the apparitions, continues
to flow abundantly to this very day. Lourdes is commemorated in books,
songs, and movies as a place of prayer, healing, miracles, and peace.
Many Christians and non-Christians will pray and celebrate there during this
anniversary year. For those who are unable to travel to France,
Bishop Campbell has designated St. Bernadette as a local place of
pilgrimage. On Monday, February 11, public devotions will begin at
3 p.m. with Mass at 4 p.m. February 11 is designated as the feast day
of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Thank You to all who joined us on
February 3 at St. Bernadette's 9 a.m. Mass and our reception in the
Parish Hall afterwards. We were overcome by all the good wishes,
special greeting cards, and gifts we received for our 50th Anniversary.
Also, Fr. Walter, the two deacons, Liz's solo and Ann's accompaniment
made the Mass very personal for our family. We truly feel blessed with
all the good friends & family sharing our 50 years.

can be in place. If you do use the facilities without permission, you
will be responsible for any insurance problems that arise.
