Bulletin Deadline: Monday, 12:00 Noon.
Third Sunday of Lent
When we meet the people of God in today's readings,
a journey home has finally become reality. Hundreds of years in slavery
have ended. These people have seen plagues cripple their enemies, and
they have watched Pharaoh's obstinacy give way. They are free to
leave! Even when the enemy changes his mind, God steps in and frees the
people again. God's hand leads them on a triumphant journey
through watery depths. Moses has again stepped onto a dangerous center
stage where fear and hopelessness had stopped the journey, and he has taken
them through open land. Is everyone hungry? God sends bread.
Now - we are thirsty. Think about what the
people of God accomplished at this point in the Exodus; on this day, they grumbled
so much that the place was named after them and their complaining.
What does it take to trust the hand that feeds you?
God stays close to these people. Moses is understandably afraid of the mob.
He turns to God, and there is an edge to his complaint: "What am I going to
do now? One step more and they'll stone me!" Is the
Lord in our midst or not? God is a combination of patience, hope, manna,
quail, water... and reminders.
Go in front of the people again. Take the elders.
Take the staff you've been using - the staff you struck the river in Egypt with
- that staff. I will stand there with you. Strike the
rock! Do the people get it yet?
Will we see the hand of God, present until the next tough
phase of the trip unfolds? These Scriptures are from an oral culture that
named things to show what was significant - to show what we should learn and
remember. This spot is not named after the water that flowed.

MARY CALLS ME BACK
I am discovering in my own life as a priest that without
Mary I cannot fully enter into the mystery of Jesus' compassionate love.
It is hard to explain why this is so, but I see now, mostly retrospectively,
how I used to speak more about Jesus than to him. Most of all, I see now
how Jesus had become more an argument for the moral life than the door to
mystical life which is the life in communion with God, Father, Son and Holy
Spirit. Mary calls me back to where I most want to be: to the heart of
God which, as you know, is also the heart of the world. She calls me to
let the passion of Jesus become my passion and his glory become my glory.
She calls me to move beyond the dos and don'ts of the morally correct life
into an intimacy with God where I can live the sadness, pain and anguish of
this world while already tasting the gladness, joy and peace of the glorified
Lord.
Mary didn't just call me to that life. She
also invites you to that same life. That is why with great urgency I
ask you to go to Mary and learn from her how to live in this anguishing world
as peace - bringing witnesses of her Son. -- Henri J. M. Nouwen
