Weekly Bulletin
March 2, 2008

Bulletin Deadline:   Monday, 12:00 Noon.

Fourth Sunday of Lent

The word vocation comes from the Latin vocare, "to call."   How do we known what God wants of us?   We are called to holiness.   What does that look like?
The Book of Ephesians indicates that we can tell who the children of light are by the fruit they bear.   Some clues are obvious; some dark works clearly should be avoided.   Yet often we face ambiguity.   Obviously I am not called to be a bank robber.   But should I be a banker?   Maybe a teacher?   A carpenter?   Am I meant for medicine, law, business?   For parenting?   We can tell what the fruits are after the "child of light" has been active.   But how do I know ahead of time what to do?   What if I'm called to produce a new kind of fruit?
In the mirror, do I see a child of light?   I know this person's strengths and failings.   I see the honest attempts, but also the dishonesties, the nonattempts.   What can God do with that?
When Samuel is told to find the anointed one of God, he is told to see deeply.   Jesse's son, a good-looking choice, is not the one.   Neither are any in the next string of brothers.   The young man is in the back, out of the picture, while Samuel looked at the others.
John's passage is not subtle.   Look at the Pharisees, the healed blind man, the man's parents.   Look at Jesus.   This is a story that asks who really is blind and who really can see.   Our question of good fruit and the question of recognition reach a new depth here.   Who can Jesus heal?   When can he do it?   Who is willing to go on record about what they see?   The blind man knows one thing: Jesus touched him, and now he can see.   To the experts, to those who have seen a lot, Jesus looks like a sinner.
So what are we called to do?   We are supposed to be Jesus' hands and eyes.   "How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?" (John 9:16).   Yet God call us.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy

Live for Today

"Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents
that he was born blind?"   (Jn 9:2)

When life is ripped apart, and all the things that matter most are gone in an instant, we ask: Why?   Why me?   What have I done to bring this into my life?   There are no answers to why bad things happen.   The question should be: When bad things happen, what can we do?   We can isolate ourselves, become angry with everyone and never move on, or we can turn our pain over to God and welcome new experiences into our lives.
When Kevin was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer, the doctors told him he had only four months to live.   That was over three years ago.   Kevin is a single father of three teenage children.   He works full time and receives chemotherapy every couple of weeks.   I asked him, "How do you live each day with cancer hanging over your head?"   He smiled and said, "I treat every day as an adventure, and I refuse to let anything make me sad, angry, or worried.   I live for today.   Believe it or not, I'm happier now that I was before I was diagnosed."
We all have to cope with the painful and unfair circumstances.   It's fair and healthy to ask "Why?"   However, I've seen too many people hang on to that question far too long.   Kevin is not sitting with his head in his hands, asking, "Why me?"   He's living his life.   We should be living our lives as well!

Sr. Nancy, O.P.

Reverence for Life: Conscience and Faithful Citizenship   by Kentucky Bishops.   No Catholic voter or politician can hide behind the evasion -- "Personally I oppose abortion, but I cannot impose my religious beliefs [or my morality] on others."   It is moral contradiction.   Living the faith in the context of democratic pluralism cannot justify such self-deception.
"Living the Gospel of Life" (1998) unmasked the mistaken assumptions of such rationalizations (USCCB):
"First, regarding abortion, the point when human life begins is not a religious belief but a scientific fact – a fact on which there is clear agreement even among leading abortion advocates.   Second, the sanctity of human life is not merely Catholic doctrine but part of humanity's global ethical heritage.   Finally, democracy is not served by silence ....   Real pluralism depends on people of conviction struggling vigorously to advance their beliefs by every ethical and legal means at their disposal"   (No. 24).
No one can be exempted from the logical step to translate moral opposition into effective strategies.   If there is a lack of public consensus to effect full legal protection, no one can be excused from working toward creating consensus as a first step.
In publishing our statement on political responsibility we explain our intent: "In this statement we bishops do not intend to tell Catholics for whom or against whom to vote.   Our purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God's truth."

Operation Rice Bowl (ORB) -- Dignity of the Human Person.  Being diagnosed with HIV and AIDS can be devastating.   A first, Angeline and Prosper were in denial, even as they became sicker.   CRS helped them to accept their situation, gain access to anti-retro viral medications and other treatments, and meet others living with HIV and AIDS in their village in Cameroon.   Your participation in ORB helps CRS restore a feeling of hope for millions living with HIV and AIDS across the globe.
