Weekly Bulletin
March 9, 2008
|
|
Bulletin Deadline: Monday, 12:00 Noon.
Fifth Sunday of Lent
Do we dare face the pain of Christ? Do we dare
believe something is going to be accomplished by pain - his or ours?
Today's readings couldn't focus more around a
single life-and-death point. Ezekiel is told to prophesy to a people
who have given up. Their hope is gone. They are sent a prophet
who announces that the Lord will open up graves and bring up the dead.
Let us be very careful here, because familiarity with
this theme can dull the message. If a people have lost hope, if they
feel cut off from God, what should you tell them? If new life is
something that cannot be delivered, it is the most treacherous thing possible
to raise their hopes.
Saint Paul's audience is pushed to the limit.
These Christian Romans have been challenged to sake their lives, their inner
spirit, any human sort of peace they could hope for, to follow a Lord different
from the lord those around them follow. They are asked to reject the
empire's lord, Caesar, to follow Christ. That could get them killed.
Paul promises they can expect what Jesus got - death and resurrection. The
Spirit of him who raised Jesus is in them.
When called to help Lazarus, Jesus seems to delay, to show
up late. In Judea, he himself is walking into danger. At the tomb,
Jesus asks others to do a lot. Show me where he is. Move that
stone. Do you want to see God's hand now? Then Jesus screams,
Lazarus, come out! And Lazarus does. Others are told to
unbind him. With all the activity, all the directions to others, Jesus
does one thing no one else can do. He calls Lazarus to life. And
Lazarus lives again.
Jesus is greatly disturbed at Lazarus' tomb. He
and we face something deep and serious.
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead
dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your
mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you (Romans 8:11)

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
This Thursday evening, March 13, the St. Bernadette
Spirituality Network will sponsor an evening of prayer entitled "Celebrate the
Gift of Womanhood." This Lenten opportunity is offered to all women
of our parish as well as an invitation extended to St. Mary's and St.
Mark's. Spouses are also invited to accompany their wives if they
feel so moved.
I have asked a friend, Debbie Richey, to share her
reflections on the friendship between Ruth and Naomi. This particular
account of the Old Testament will shed a "new light" on these two
figures. Please bring a friend and meet perhaps some new faces in our
community. This Lenten experience begins at 7 p.m. in the Mary Good
Center and will conclude at 8:30 p.m.
