Easter
Twenty centuries after the life,
death, and resurrection of Jesus, it is tempting to wish we had been among
the first witnesses.
What if we heard Jesus preaching? What if we
traveled to Galilee, anticipating the arrival of the teacher who is in every
town's gossip, and then actually heard and saw him? How wonderful
it would have been to be there!
What questions do his disciples face? Are we
among the "blessed poor" - those who will see the reign of God?
Are we among those who weep now but will laugh again? What if we were
sitting on a hill near Bethsaida, shocked to find there was bread for us, too,
in a huge crowd of people Jesus taught about the reign of God and then fed?
Would faith be easy then? Could we do anything other than
believe? What brings faith? Then and now, what brings doubt?
After following him to Jerusalem, Jesus' disciples
met violence, confusion, and a fear that made them run from him when he died.
They were right there with him. They had to face doubt and pain
and fear, and they could not do it by themselves.
So what changed them? What did this bunch of frail
human beings experience that made them walk back into the center of the town
they had fled, start preaching about the man who had been killed, and talk
about him as if he were the God of life itself?
In every account of the resurrection, the story of the
witnesses is strange. They have trouble recognizing Jesus. Words
in the Scriptures struggle to talk about the risen Lord. Witnesses are
surprised, sad, mistaken, and shocked - and then they are struck with wonder
and realization. A different sort of recognition is called for.
Jesus is changed. He is the man they knew, yet he has become something
else.
They are changed. They met him alive
again. We were not there. Can we take their word for what
happened? Do we dare believe them? If they are right,
if he does live, we can meet him too.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
Awaken Me
Risen One, come, meet me in the garden of my life.
Lure me into elation. Revive my silent hope.
Coax my dormant dreams. Raise up my neglected gratitude. Entice
my tired enthusiasm. Give life to my faltering relationships. Role
back the stone of my indifference. Unwrap the deadness in my spiritual
life. Impart heartiness in my work.
Risen One, send me forth as a disciple of your unwavering
love, a messenger of your unlimited joy.
Resurrected One, may I become ever more convinced that
your presence lives on, and on, and on, and on.
July Rupp
My Easter prayer for each of you on this glorious Feast
of the Resurrection.

Jesus brought God's Love to the table of the Last
Supper. He pledged his body and blood would be given for us and it was
fulfilled on Good Friday. His self-gift is present and energizing in
every Mass.
My pledge to you is to make Mass as available as possible
in my ministry for you. It is the reason for my priesthood, and an
imitation of the self-giving of Our Lord.
By receiving His Body and Blood, you are energized to be
self-giving in your homes, workplace and in community affairs. Rejoice
that you share in the love feast!
Fr. James Walter
