Bulletin Deadline:   Monday, 12:00 Noon.

Second Sunday of Easter

Mary Magdalene is getting pulled to pieces these days.
Novels, movies, plays, scholarly books, not-so-scholarly books - all want to tell us who this disciple was and what she means today.   Speculation on her relationship to Jesus is a cottage industry: Jesus and Mary were married.   They had kids.   The kids had kids.   Their bloodline stretches into our time, passing through the Holy Land, through Europe, through exotic castles, through secret societies, through Hollywood sound sets.   Where do they get all this stuff?   It intrigues us because our imagination needs something to work with.   We would love to be able to flesh out what happened, to fill in the picture.
Is there anything solid we can use to feed the urge to see Jesus and Mary Magdalene more clearly?   Let's look at an ancient Christian image of her.   She is with the others who go to the empty tomb.   They are shocked, wondering - what does it mean?   They couldn't make sense of it.   They could not understand how this all connected to their Scriptures.
When everyone else left the tomb, Mary Magdalene stayed back, weeping.   She wanted to know where they had taken Jesus.   She saw the newly risen Jesus and still did not know it was Jesus.   What is she doing there?   Every word from her, every tear, every hope is that she would be able to go to him.   Her love for Jesus is bigger than her fear and confusion.
When he speaks to her, she recognizes him.   Mary is the disciple who would use her heart and mind to know where Jesus is.   She is the one who will wait for him.   She is the one who will have her hopes fulfilled.   She is simply the one who will then tell the other disciples what the risen Jesus meant, the one who will tell them what he told her.

Pope Benedict.   A Genius rises from impoverished childhood.   The pope is a paradox: an intellectual genius who is proudly the son of a small-town constable.
Brain Power.   Let's begin with his genius.   As of 2002, the printed bibliography of his publications ran 80 pages long, including translations.   His theological works have become scholarly benchmarks, and popular best-sellers.
He is the first Catholic bishop to be elected to the French Academy since the founder, Cardinal Richelieu.   The academy gave him the spot - they are limited to 40 - previously occupied by Russian physicist and humanitarian Andrei Sakharov.   Astronomers have named an asteroid after him (Ratzinger 8661).
For years a number of people have called him ("the Mozart of theology" because he dictates finished text, much the way Mozart wrote music, virtually free of error.   His former students, secretaries and co-workers all testify that he speaks in paragraphs, thinks in chapters and writes his books in a single draft.
He often knows quotations verbatim, in up to 10 languages, sometimes from sources he has not read for many years.   Imagine a human being who has been learning for 75 years, and remembering virtually all of it.

Pope Benedict XVI will Visit the United States Tuesday - Sunday, April 15-20.   He will be received at the White House on April 16, and will address the General Assembly of the United Nations on Friday morning, April 18.   Turn on the TV.   Closing Mass Sunday, April 20 in Yankee Stadium, New York City.

CHURCH ETIQUETTE

Common courtesies will help a suitable environment for worship:
  • Please no cell phones! It's discourteous to have them ring in God's House.
  • Wear appropriate dress!   NO shorts, halter tops, flip flops, and baseball hats are best left at home.   Let your body be a "mystery" to us!   We humans are distracted by inappropriate dress!
  • Avoid talking in Church (a whisper is okay when necessary).   Our worship space is a place to pray.   Please visit outside.
  • No gum chewing.   Remember the one-hour fast before Holy Communion.   Water and medications are permitted.
  • Get to Church with enough time to settle down and collect your thoughts.   Take time to prepare yourself spiritually for the best hour of your week!
What a difference there will be in our appreciation of the Mass and reverence for God if we all learn to abide by these simple principles.   We are a spiritual family and respect our "prayer time" together.
