Bulletin Deadline:   Monday, 12:00 Noon.

Third Sunday of Easter

Faith can be Intimidating.   Some of our saints - heroes of the faith - have been asked to give the greatest sacrifice for God: they have been martyred.   Giving your life is a strong indicator of genuine faith.   As the Church of the early centuries grew, often it was out of seed - the blood - of the martyrs, that new faith was created.
In a culture where comfort is common, where believing is legal, is faith easy or hard?   We have the time, the luxury, to find competition for our faith.   We have other ways to fill our time, alternative ways to look at what is important.   We can distract ourselves if we choose.
Instead of the dramatic choice of apostasy or death, our choices are more subtle.   We can give our lives in smaller steps.   We can inch our way toward attractions nearby, many of them noble and good.   We can seek God.   Peter says we are sojourners, we are ransomed.   We are left here to make something of our time.
On the very day of the resurrection, two disciples left the city and headed for a village called Emmaus.   They were trying to piece together what the loss of Jesus and the rumors of his "return" could mean.   They met a stranger who connected them to their Scriptures and their experiences.   He set their hearts of fire, but they still could not make sense of what they were hoping for.   So he stayed with them.   They could not yet recognize him, but he stayed with them.
Disciples who struggle to make sense of God's calling are not wasting their time.   Slogging through the modern distractions and temptations is not glamorous.   Walking, worrying, asking, not getting it...God can use all of this.   The two disciples asked the stranger to stay with them.   When he broke bread, their eyes lit up.   Then they retraced their steps and found the other disciples.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy

Someone once said to Miss Montana: "I didn't recognize you without your sash."   When we encounter a person out of context, we may not know them.   At some high school reunions everyone wears name tags with their yearbook pictures on them so others can tell who they are.   In today's Gospel story of the two disciples who did not recognize Jesus until the breaking of the bread, we can discover our own story.   In our life's journey, we may also not recognize Jesus.   There may come a day when we will wonder how we could have missed him.   The truth is that Jesus is present to us all the time.   In the last sentence of the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus reminds us: "I am with you always, until the end of the world."

CHURCH ETIQUETTE

Common courtesies will help a suitable environment for worship:
  • Please no cell phones! It's discourteous to have them ring in God's House.
  • Wear appropriate dress!   NO shorts, halter tops, flip flops, and baseball hats are best left at home.   Let your body be a "mystery" to us!   We humans are distracted by inappropriate dress!
  • Avoid talking in Church (a whisper is okay when necessary).   Our worship space is a place to pray.   Please visit outside.
  • No gum chewing.   Remember the one-hour fast before Holy Communion.   Water and medications are permitted.
  • Get to Church with enough time to settle down and collect your thoughts.   Take time to prepare yourself spiritually for the best hour of your week!
What a difference there will be in our appreciation of the Mass and reverence for God if we all learn to abide by these simple principles.   We are a spiritual family and respect our "prayer time" together.
