Bulletin Deadline:   Monday, 12:00 Noon.

Fourth Sunday of Easter

For most of us, the shepherd caring for his sheep is a cute metaphor.   Sheep look fluffy and white in the pictures.   That is especially true if the pictures are not actual photographs, but are painted or cut out from white paper - the normal church sheep we see hanging around with Jesus in schoolrooms.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to talk to people who grew up on farms and worked with sheep.   I know one shepherd who actually switched careers and is now a priest - he moved from pasturing to pastoring.   Book can give you information about sheep.   The Internet is good too.   It has lots of material on the care of sheep, characteristics of sheep, comparisons of sheep with other animals.   With all this basic information, even those of us who grew up in the city or suburbs can educate ourselves to get a little closer to what Jesus' audience knew really well.   We can get a little closer to the inside joke.
      Sheep are stupid.
Oh, they're cute, all right.   Little lambs will recognize you - they know you're the one who is going to feed them.   They can play.   They're especially good at hide and seek because they're really good at getting lost.   Some animals have a sense of direction; if you fall asleep, a horse can keep going and get you home much better than a car.   Sheep, on the other hand, have no horse sense.   One woman I talked to described how a sheep on their farm got its head caught under a wire fence.   It bleated and wanted help, which they supplied.   Two hours later, the same sheep got stuck in the same place.   Its head fit through the hole, but its body did not, and sheep don't learn from experience.   The farmer fixed their fence; they were pretty sure they weren't going to fix Fluffy.
Here's the punch line: shepherding takes a lot of work, understanding, and patience.   Jesus is the good shepherd.   Jesus reveals to us what God is.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy

"Be Surprised by Joy"

There is suffering ahead of us, immense suffering, a suffering that will continue to tempt us to think that we have chosen the wrong road and that others were more shrewd than we.   But don't be surprised by the pain.   Be surprised by joy, be surprised by the little flower that shows its beauty in the midst of a barren desert, and be surprised by the immense healing power that keeps bursting forth like springs of fresh water from the depth of our pain.
And so, with an eye focused on the poor, a heart trusting that we will get what we need, and a spirit always surprised by joy, we will be truly powerful and walk through this valley of darkness performing miracles because it's God's power that will go out from us.
Henri J. Nouwen

CHURCH ETIQUETTE

Common courtesies will help a suitable environment for worship:
  • Please no cell phones! It's discourteous to have them ring in God's House.
  • Wear appropriate dress!   NO shorts, halter tops, flip flops, and baseball hats are best left at home.   Let your body be a "mystery" to us!   We humans are distracted by inappropriate dress!
  • Avoid talking in Church (a whisper is okay when necessary).   Our worship space is a place to pray.   Please visit outside.
  • No gum chewing.   Remember the one-hour fast before Holy Communion.   Water and medications are permitted.
  • Get to Church with enough time to settle down and collect your thoughts.   Take time to prepare yourself spiritually for the best hour of your week!
What a difference there will be in our appreciation of the Mass and reverence for God if we all learn to abide by these simple principles.   We are a spiritual family and respect our "prayer time" together.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.   Did You Know?   What does a sexual predator look like?   Well, they look like everyone else, and many times they are trusted friends, business and community leaders.   The Diocese of Columbus offers classes on how to spot the warning signs of those who would sexual abuse children.   By learning what to watch for and applying the principles taught, each of us gains the knowledge and ability to prevent a predator from gaining access to our youth.   The class is called ""Protecting God's Children" and is FREE and OPEN to all adults, not just those who volunteer with youths.   Please consider attending a session and becoming part of the solution to this devastating societal problem   You can register at www.virtus.org (yellow registration button) or by contacting Barb Cain, Safe Environment Consultant for the Diocese of Columbus at 614-241-2565.
