Fifth Sunday of Easter

The disciples were enthralled by Jesus.   They were fascinated by what he said and did.   He even inspired them to seek the reign of God, to look for it, to follow him even if it meant leaving their lives behind.   They left their jobs and homes and traveled with him.
It is fascinating, and in a way encouraging, to see the disciples squirm.   In John's Gospel there is an awkward feeling about the disciples.   They are certain enough of Jesus to follow him, but they are still uncertain as to what that means.   We don't know where you're going.   We don't know where we're going.   Don't we need to know more?
Why is this encouraging?   We are disciples like them.   We live in a different culture and face a different set of challenges and doubts, but as we look to these first disciples to receive the message of the Gospel, we also look to them for how to grapple with its challenges.
What modern followers haven't second-guessed the commitment?   Can I keep going, leaving other options behind?   What is discipleship Costing me?   This world has much to offer, and every choice I make for the Gospel leaves something good behind.   Each choice is a bet on the future.   This is not to say Christianity is "misery now for pie-in-the-sky later," a caricature that has been used to dismiss our real hope.   But it acknowledges that we should consider whether it is worth it.   Did not Jesus say to count the cost?
The disciples who made a huge commitment nevertheless found themselves wondering what lay ahead.   They asked, can you show us more?   Jesus' answer was disarmingly down to earth.   If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.   I am here to give you the tools you need to follow through.
The carpenter's son is building houses for now and for later.

Bishop's Annual Appeal.   I wish to remind all St. Bernadette Parishioners that in two weeks will be the Bishop's Annual Appeal weekend.   We ask that you prayerfully consider your gift so that the diocese can continue its ministry and mission.   Our diocese covers 23 counties and the need is great.   No gift is too small.

Elections for Parish Council.   We are looking for individuals interested in serving on Parish Council for terms of one to three years beginning in August 2008.   Elections for three Council seats will be held May 17-18.   If you are interested in running for one of the open seats or wish more information about serving on Parish Council, please call Suzanne Wilkins at 215-0736.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy

Dear God,
I am so afraid to open my clenched fists!   Who will I be when I have nothing left to hold on to?   Who will I be when I stand before you with empty hands?   Please help me to gradually open my hands and to discover that I am not who I own, but what you want to give me.   And what you want to give me is love, unconditional, everlasting love.   Amen.

Question for meditation:
What am I holding tightly in my clenched fist?

Sr. Nancy, O.P.

Forty-six Received Confirmation at St. Mark Church, April 16.   It was a jubilant celebration for a full church in a highly decorated St. Mark's for the Confirmation Mass.   Msgr. Stephan Moloney, Vicar General of the Diocese of Columbus, administered the sacrament to the eighth grade students of both parishes, as well as to the seventh grade students of St. Mark.
The excitement and joy was so obvious, and a beautiful reception followed with delicious desserts.   These young students have had a growth experience into a greater realization of their Catholic identity.   Our St. Bernadette class had visited Holy Family Church in Columbus and its soup kitchen and met the poor people who dine there; they took their retreat at Sts. Peter and Paul Retreat Center at Newark; and now to be confirmed at another parish – all this increases their sense of a broader vision of what the Catholic Church is and does.
Thanks to Father Peter Gideon and his fine staff at St. Mark for this opportunity.   We at St. Bernadette have a mature group who know what it is "to play an away game."   We're ready!
Fr. Walter
