Weekly Bulletin
April 27, 2008
|
|
Bulletin Deadline: Monday, 12:00 Noon.
Sixth Sunday of Easter
Peter was a fisherman before he had a midlife crisis
and found different work. Who knows whether he was restless when he mended
his nets, kept an eye on the weather, saw the stars at night, and brought in his catch to sell?
Was he bored as he repeated the routine day after day, month after month? How many years
did he work the lake? Would he have been content to live out that calling, feeding
others? Or did he wonder whether there was more ahead of him?
We don't know the answers to those questions. We do know that
when he was called by Jesus, he stood up and answered. He is the one who recognized
Jesus as the Messiah, the Christ. He is the one who still hard to work at understanding
what that recognition meant. He failed. He left Jesus alone. He went
back to working the nets. Christ came and called him again; Jesus knew Peter loved him.
After the resurrection, we find Peter as the voice of the message.
In the New Testament, we don't have enough information to get a sense of the personalities
of most of the apostles. Some are only names. More is said of Peter; we know him
to be impetuous, a striking combination of brave and afraid, one who speaks out and one who
feels deeply. In The Acts of the Apostles his hands are put to his new work; laid on
new followers, his hands strengthen them. The Spirit's movement works through his
touch.
Peter has been through a lot. What message might he have for later
believers? Be whole. Sanctify Christ in your hearts. In your mind too.
Be ready to answer those who ask why you believe, why you hope. When they ask, be ready
to answer.
You'll have to prepare for this. You'll have to think
through what you're doing, what you know. Answer with
gentleness. Let them see your reverence. Let them be drawn by your response to
the call you're answering.
The skills of a fisherman come in handy here.

"Draw Me to Yourself"
In this moment draw me to yourself, Lord, and make me aware not so much
of what I've given as of all I have received and so have yet to share.
Send me forth in power and gladness and with great courage to live out
in the world what I pray and profess, that, in sharing, I may do justice, make peace, grow in
love, enjoy myself, other people, and your world now, and you forever.

An Awesome Religious Concert with was heard on Sunday, April
13th. Our new parish Allen Organ with 4 tonalities (a
Quad) was certainly demonstrated well by Mr. Charles Yanarella of Pickerington. He
is a graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and surely a virtuoso on the organ.
He inspired us with his renditions of "sacred music" which moved our hearts.
Thanks also to Jeremy (JD) Latorre for his stellar trumpet duets with the organ.
And, our own Liz Latorre honored us with her lovely singing. Some 200 persons
attended. Let's have another concert in the autumn! I am grateful
that our own accompanists are dedicating themselves to practice time on the organ and
gradually adding this instrument to our worship.
Fr. Walter

Bishop's Annual Appeal. I encourage each
family at St. Bernadette's to support the BAA that begins next weekend, May 3-4.
The BAA is a source of hope and inspiration for so many in our midst. Our parish
family has been asked to raise $45,000 this year. As you prayerfully reflect upon
a gift in proportion to your financial blessings regardless of the amount. If you
are unable to give this weekend, please make your pledge the following weekend, May
10-11. The appeal goes on for 8 weeks, but get your appeal in early. Thank
you and God Bless You.

Each household can help your Bishop in his shepherding! The
needs of the whole diocese of 23 counties in the up-building of the Catholic faith is
a large responsibility. Please help your bishop by your prayers, by perhaps a
letter of support, and by sharing your treasure in the Bishop's Annual Appeal.
From the Bishop's point of view, if every household gave
something, the funds would be more than adequate. Our Parish goal is
$45,000. We have 500 households. If each household donated $100
this would be $50,000. You see, donations add up. We are a powerful
financial force when everyone does a share.
Actually, the special gifts donors who number about 25 households
donate the first $20,000. So . . . the burden becomes easier for the rest.
But please, do not excuse yourself lightly. Give something to at least show your
gratitude to God for all that you have – including the air you breathe and
the sun that shines upon you and the earth upon which you walk.
Show your gratitude. Show your concern for your faith.
Share something for the Bishop's Annual Appeal. Pledge or Donation
Sunday is May 4.
