Weekly Bulletin

Bulletin Deadline: Monday, 12:00 Noon.
Seventh Sunday of Easter
Several months ago I went with a group of tourists
to the coliseum in Rome. We got off an air-conditioned bus and crossed
a busy street. We stood in line for a while. Then we stood next to the place
where the Roman emperor sat centuries ago.
Ruts and tunnels are exposed in the floor of this huge arena.
You can see where the Romans kept animals and human beings before they were released for
display, torture, and death. Tens of thousands of Christians suffered for the Gospel
here. To see this site is daunting. To stand and stare where the history of
the early Church unfolded, where the blood of faith and spilled, drives the mind and the
heart together to a deep place, a gut place where a groaning pain stretches to link with hope.
Could persecution and violent deaths shut down the voice of Christ's
message? That was the plan. Yet, through the sacrifice of martyrs, the empire
came to its knees before the crucified victim and those who joined themselves to him - those
who became his Body. We know Rome's embrace of Christianity was sloppy, complex,
and political. Yet the powers that wanted to overcome the Church fell under the power
of the Gospel. What on earth could transform these high stone walls, these foundations,
these deadly pathways under the Coliseum? Power was the issue there.
Jesus connects us to the One who created each stone. This is
the power that can take a heart of stone, that deliverer of death, and change it.
Knowing what lies ahead, we look back, too, to those who witnessed the risen Christ ascending
again to the Creator. What did they see?
And where should we look? Up to the heavens, the sky?
Look around your here? In what we suffer here, nothing is wasted.

Eucharistic Adoration Adorers Needed on
Tuesday, 4 pm; Wednesday, 1 am and 2 am. Please call Marti Gundelfinger at 654-2277.
Each household can help your Bishop in his shepherding! The
needs of the whole diocese of 23 counties in the up-building of the Catholic faith is a
large responsibility. Please help your bishop by your prayers, by perhaps a letter
of support, and by sharing your treasure in the Bishop's Annual Appeal.
From the Bishop's point of view, if every household gave
something, the funds would be more than adequate. Our Parish goal is $45,000.
We have 500 households. If each household donated $100 this would be $50,000.
You see, donations add up. We are a powerful financial force when everyone does
a share.
Actually, the special gifts donors who number about 25 households
donate the first $20,000. So . . . the burden becomes easier for the rest.
But please, do not excuse yourself lightly. Give something to at least show your
gratitude to God for all that you have – including the air you breathe and
the sun that shines upon you and the earth upon which you walk. Show
your gratitude. Show your concern for your faith. Share
something for the Bishop's Annual Appeal. Pledge or Donation start
Sunday is May 4.
