Pentecost Sunday

The Jewish Feast of Weeks was a harvest festival.   The "first fruits" of the growing season were celebrated.   In Jewish tradition, these natural fruits were connected to the even more amazing fruit of God's goodness, the gift for a people brought out of slavery.   The feast also commemorated God's giving of the Law through Moses.   It was celebrated seven weeks - fifty days, to be exact - after Passover.   Among Greek-speaking Jews, the length of the celebration led to its name, Pentecost.
In The Acts of the Apostles, we see a Jerusalem filled with people in town to celebrate.   Could something new be possible?   With its colorful crowd and special effects, the coming of the Spirit at Pentecost is a biblical scene made-to-order for a movie: A sound like a terrible wind came, and fire hovered over those collected in a room.   They had been waiting, these followers of Jesus Christ who had seen so much and been through a collage of hope, heartbreak, wonder, and a new vision.   If the movie were to be made, what would it show, failure or triumph?
What they got was a new way to describe the fruits of God.   The Spirit gave them this ability.   They spilled out into the crowded city, all talking at once.   Some of the crowd was stunned.   Others saw the hand of God in what they heard - new fruits.
In Pentecost, Christians see the birth of the Church.   It's worth looking at the Greek root beneath that word too.   Ekklesia, the word for church in the New testament, means assembly, a gathering.   Those drawn to Jesus, those touched by fire, those who spoke in a way they could not have known on their own - they all came together and gathered others by the thousands.
We gather at a new Passover with new fruits and a new covenant.   This is no movie script - this is news!

"Gather Your Harvest": Pentecost.   Many are planting gardens or flower beds these days.   Yet, spiritually we can already reap the harvest of doing the weeks of Lent and Easter.   Pentecost is an ancient Jewish feast of harvesting.   In Galatians 5:22, Paul speaks of a harvest: the fruits of the Holy Spirit.   "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control."   Has the observance of Lent/Easter-time brought forth these fruits in your garden?   Let us keep working at it.

St. Bernadette Parish -- Celebrating God's Gifts

Loving God, we thank you for giving us Mom and for the many ways she shows us your love.   On this, her special day, we ask you to bless her with your joy and peace.   As she cares for all of us, help her to find strength for the many challenges she faces.   Help us to show our gratitude for all she does, and especially for who she is.   Amen.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL MOMS!   Mothers, you are the love which binds together your family.   Thank you for being what God wants you to be.   May God strengthen you and always lift up your heart.   Rejoice in your day!

Pope Benedict to U.S. Bishops:   America is also a land of great faith.   Your people are remarkable for their religious fervor, and they take pride in belonging to a worshipping community.   They have confidence in God, and they do not hesitate to bring moral arguments rooted in biblical faith into their public discourse.   Respect for freedom of religion is deeply ingrained in the American consciousness – a fact which has contributed to this country's attraction for generations of immigrants seeking a home where they can worship freely in accordance with their beliefs.
While it is true that this country is marked by a genuinely religious spirit, the subtle influence of secularism can nevertheless color the way people allow their faith to influence their behavior.   Is it consistent to profess our beliefs in church on Sunday and then during the week to promote business practices or medical procedures contrary to those beliefs?   Is it consistent for practicing Catholics to ignore or exploit the poor and the marginalized, to promote sexual behavior contrary to Catholic moral teaching or to adopt positions that contradict the right to life of every human being from conception to natural death?
Any tendency to treat religion as a private matter must be resisted.   Only when their faith permeates every aspect of their lives do Christians become truly open to the transforming power of the gospel.   (Excerpt from 4/17/08 Address in Washington, D.C.)
