Weekly Bulletin
June 1, 2008

Bulletin Deadline:   Monday, 12:00 Noon.

June 1 (This Weekend):   Our new Summer Sunday Mass Schedule starts - 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Tefillin are small, leather boxes worn by Orthodox Jewish men on their foreheads and arms during ordinary weekday-morning prayer (not on the Sabbath or holidays).   (In some Christian sources, tefillin are referred to as phylacteries, but the word tefillin is actually proper.)   The boxes contain verses from the Torah (the books of Moses).   Selected verses are written out from Exodus and Deuteronomy to remind those praying of what God has done and what God has offered.
On this day in the Church calendar, we have now completed the Easter season and are back to "ordinary" time.   We can learn a great deal from our elder brothers and sisters in faith about how to live in the ordinary world.   How best should we remember what God has done so that, in season or out, especially during ordinary times, we won't forget?   How do we keep the words of God in front of our eyes?
We have just experienced the serious, sobering reflections of Lent followed by the surprise and delight of the resurrection at Easter.   Pentecost, Trinity, and Corpus Christi Sundays have unfolded before us like the glimpse the transfiguration gave to the disciples of Christ - a look at where we are headed.   It might be tempting to ask to camp at the top of the mount where we have found extraordinary revelations.   But from the liturgical heights of our biggest season, we climb back down to our usual, ordinary patterns.
If we drive down billboarded highways or watch an hour or two of television, dozens of advertisements ask for a place among our priorities.   In the regular world we live in, we have some basic, important choices to make.   The temptations are sometimes large.   Sometimes they are subtle.
When will we worship?   Which gods will we choose?

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy

This inner drama at each Mass contributes to the process of our spiritual transformation into Christ.   It all takes time.   When we receive Communion, we need to remember that we are not changing Christ into ourselves.   Jesus is transforming us into himself.   This requires a proper understanding of the Real Presence of Jesus under the appearance of bread and wine.   It is not simply a symbol that merely points to Jesus.   Nor is Christ's presence just a projection on our part in the sense that we make him present when we receive him.   As Pope Benedict XVI told the young people gathered for the Twentieth World Youth Day:

The Body and Blood of Christ is given to us so that we ourselves will be transformed in our turn.   We are to become the Body of Christ, his own Flesh and Blood.
We all eat the one bread, and this means that we ourselves become one.   In this way, adoration, as we said earlier, becomes union.   God no longer simply stands before us as the One who is totally Other.   He is within us, and we are in him.   His dynamic enters into us and then seeks to spread outwards to others until it fills the world, so that his love can truly become the dominant measure of the world. (Benedict XVI, Homily at Marienfeld, Twentieth World Youth Day [August 21, 2005])

St. Bernadette Parish -- Celebrating God's Gifts

When Grandma and Grandpa Grew Up verses a Postmodern Mentality.   Grandma and Grandpa knew the "primacy of truth and values over feelings, of intelligence over the will, of the spirit over the flesh, of unity over pluralism, of asceticism over life, of the eternal over the temporal.   In our world there is a spontaneous preference for feeling over the will, for impressions over intelligence, for an arbitrary logic and the search for pleasure over an ascetic and prohibitive morality.   This is a world in which sensitivity, emotion and the present moment come first.   Human existence, therefore, is a place where there is freedom without restraints, where a person exercises, or believes he can exercise, his personal empire and creativity."
Cardinal Martini suggests these four remedies:
            1.   Spiritual Reading to discover in the biblical text the living word that challenges us, directs us, which gives shape to our existence.
            2.   Self-mastery.   We need to learn anew that the frank opposition to desires is sometimes more joyful than endless concessions to everything that seems desirable but ends in boredom and satiety.
            3.   Silence.   We need to move away from an unhealthy slavery to rumors and endless chattering, from characterless music that only makes noise, and find each day at least one half-hour of silence and half-day each week to think about ourselves, to reflect and pray for a longer period.
            4.   Humility.   Leave room for the Holy Spirit, who works better than we do and more deeply.

From Father Walter:
"Amen" before Communion is very meaningful!   Before one receives Holy Communion, the response "Amen" is answered when the priest or Minister of Communion says, "The Body of Christ."   This is also done before taking the precious "Blood of Christ." This becomes a great moment of professing what you believe, that Jesus Christ is truly present.   Also, one bows the head slightly in adoration of Christ while the person ahead is receiving Communion.   This reminder I hope is helpful to you and it highlights these sacred moments of being a Communicant.
