Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
It's a good idea to read
the Scriptures in their historical contexts. What
were "tax collectors" in Jesus' time and place? The
answer to that question tells us that today's Gospel is not an
invitation to turn a critical eye toward the Internal Revenue Service.
Tax collectors today may make us a bit nervous.
We probably don't look at an audit as a fun event. If we're
honest and keep records, though, we can probably put our emotions
aside, go to the meeting, and accept that we have contributed to the
decent operation of a necessary system. On calmer days, days
we are not going in for audits, we probably see taxes for what they
are: part of the payment we make to state and local governments for
providing certain services. Today's tax folks are trying
to do a necessary job, working within the law and using generally
accepted accounting principles.
Tax collectors in Jesus' day, however,
were extortionists. The Jewish homeland was under Roman rule.
Roman taxes were demanded of the Jewish people, some of whom
were tax collectors themselves; they profited by taking more taxes
than necessary and keeping the difference. They were seen as
turncoats - Jewish collaborators with a Roman occupation that gouged
the people on their own land. Why did the people pay? They
had to. The tax collector could turn them in if they did not.
Taxpayers in Jesus' day were not grumbling
about giving part of their income to the government. They
simply hated giving money to people they saw as local sellouts to
foreign invaders. In that context, we now see a bizarre twist
of Jesus' actions when he invites one of these folks to join
his own inner circle of disciples.
Ok, but doesn't that mean he's changed
his ways? No doubt. But why does Jesus let all his old
friends come to the dinner too?

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
DID YOU KNOW?
More than 2.3 million people in the U.S. are
incarcerated. That equals 1 out of every 100 adults. This
is astonishing. Worldwide, there are more than 9 million people
living behind bars.
This vast population is not forgotten by the
church, and ministering to it recalls Jesus' teaching in
today's Gospel.
Kairos prison ministry has been called the best
example of the early church in existence today. Perhaps prisoners
are today's equivalent of what the Pharisees called "tax
collectors and sinners." Jesus ministered to them because
he said he came to call sinners and bring mercy.
Kairos is an ancient Greek word for the
"right or opportune moment." More than 20,000 volunteers
present the program, which bring teams of men and women from the
communities surrounding an institution to present a short course
in Christianity over a three-day weekend. We may not be called
to prison ministry, but we all can reach out to the "tax collectors
and sinners" or our time.

St. Bernadette Parish -- Celebrating God's Gifts
St. Bernadette 2008 Soubirous Award.
"Rosemary Mock is one of the many quiet yet consistent volunteers
of St. Bernadette Parish. She works behind the scenes using her
gifts of organization and skills in cooking and meal planning to bring
the good people of St. Bernadette Parish together. On several
occasions, Rosemary has rescued us by planning, shopping, cooking, and
serving meals on very short notice. When I think of the efforts
of Rosemary Mock, I am reminded of Martha and Mary from Luke's
Gospel. Rosemary, like Martha, works hard so that the rest of
us can enjoy the words and works of Christ. She gives generously
of her time and talents to meet the needs of our Parish."

would like your input. Please register to attend the Tuesday,
June 17th meeting at 7:00 pm. in the St. Bernadette Parish
Hall.
