Weekly Bulletin
June 15, 2008
|
|
Bulletin Deadline: Monday, 12:00 Noon.
Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus took a good look
around and saw a lot of work to be done. Matthew
describes him as going out to preach in a lot of towns and villages,
aching - groaning inside = because of the condition they were in,
even those places in which people gathered to pray.
The next thing he does is stir up help. The
disciples have been following him around - have they learned anything?
He sends them out with authority. Diseases and demons
are waiting for them. They are sent as healers. All
the apostles are named in this passage. There is a lot to do -
even Judas is sent out for his work.
What are we sick of? We still
talk about diseases. Do we believe God has a hand in their
cure? We tend not to talk much about demons. Are we
done with the dark areas that lurk inside ourselves and in others?
Who has authority for this kind of work today? Those
who study medicine or psychology may certainly be doing the work
of God. Our trust in medical plans and financial systems that
help us find doctors and hospitals is not misplaced. The works
of mercy done for centuries by followers of Christ have laid the
foundations for modern responses to cure and care.
But are we vulnerable in a new way, especially
because of the success we have in modern terms? Do we
still need the help the disciples were told to give?
Saint Paul repeats the Gospel message in such
a simple way we are apt to let it by as pious Bible talk without
noticing the question it raises for us. Christ died for the
helpless and the ungodly. Do we ever fit into either
category?
If Jesus traveled around our cities
and neighborhoods, what would he find?

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY
Beloved God,
We thank you for giving us Dad and for the many
ways he shows us your fatherly care. On this, his special day,
we ask you to bless him, with your peace and joy. Give him the
strength and understanding that he needs to care for us as a family.
Help us to appreciate more all he does for us and to show him how much
we love him. Amen.

32 Parishioners Plan to Attend Parish Self-Study
Meeting on Tuesday, June 17, 7 pm. in the Parish Hall. In
response to our bishop's request for all parishes to do a Self-Study,
we are doing a major portion on Tuesday night. Any parishioner
is welcome to participate, even though you have not registered.
Just come.
Leaders for Tuesday evening's sessions are:
Jeff Carpenter & Susan Eyerman -
Sacramental life of our Parish (worship and community)
Paul Deshaies & Denny Forquer -
Strategic nature of our Parish (meeting needs of all)
Brian Shonk & Pam Eltringham -
Sustainable nature of our Parish (paying and developing future)
All groups will meet in the parish hall.
Specific points will be discussed which follow the diocesan Self-Study
format. Ideas will be recorded by a secretary for each group.
A minimum of 1½ hours will be needed, maybe longer to complete properly.
(Leaders will meet again on June 30.)
Self-evaluation and future planning go together.
The Bishop is leading us to have a five-year plan for the diocese
and for each parish. May the Holy Spirit guide us each and
every year. Thanks to all.

"Rosemary Mock is one of the many quiet yet consistent volunteers
of St. Bernadette Parish. She works behind the scenes using her
gifts of organization and skills in cooking and meal planning to bring
the good people of St. Bernadette Parish together. On several
occasions, Rosemary has rescued us by planning, shopping, cooking, and
serving meals on very short notice. When I think of the efforts
of Rosemary Mock, I am reminded of Martha and Mary from Luke's
Gospel. Rosemary, like Martha, works hard so that the rest of
us can enjoy the words and works of Christ. She gives generously
of her time and talents to meet the needs of our Parish."
