Weekly Bulletin
July 6, 2008
|
|
Bulletin Deadline: Monday, 12:00 Noon.
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
At athletic contests, we claim to be a different kind of
animals. We are dolphins, horses, rams, and assorted
birds (maybe cardinals, falcons, or eagles). We are bears and bulls
and a very large collection of ferocious felines. (Apologies to
the large array of teams whose mascots will not be mentioned here,
especially to those who regularly face the ones that are mentioned.)
We may be lightning or heat or a number of weather conditions that hope
to convince our opponents we mean business: We are carrying powers
from heaven that our opponents will have to contend with!
Beware! Be frightened of us!
This might seem like a silly reflection until you
consider that grown-ups often go to a great deal of trouble to carry
signs showing their mascots vanquishing their opponents. Even
more passionate fans dress up with ornate costumes, body paint, and
real feathers and furs. We then scream at regular intervals
for a couple of hours. We are transformed. We are fierce.
All this energy and preparation is meant to help the competitors
on the field. (We are, of course, kept off the field when we act
like this, and the players very much appreciate that.) If the
same behavior came out at work (at most jobs, anyway), we'd be
dismissed.
Is there a point here? Yes: We can be taken
up by our symbols. We are serious about these allegiances.
We get so used to certain biblical images that they
lose their shock value. Zechariah describes a victorious conqueror
who rides in triumph - on a little donkey. A humble conqueror?
What could that possibly mean to the crowds?
Do you recognize this passage? In the middle
of ordinary time, Zachariah asks us to ask what the crowds would be
shouting about in Jerusalem, before the Passover.

The Ten Great Persecutions
| |
|
| 1. |
Nero (54-68) accused Christians of being
enemies of mankind |
| 2. |
Domitian (81-96) victimized mainly nobility. |
| 3. |
Trajan (98-117) considered Christians state enemies. |
| 4. |
Marcus Aurelius (161-180) confiscated
Christians' property and tortured his victims. |
| 5. |
Septimius Severus (193-211) outlawed conversion
to Christianity. |
| 6. |
Maximinus Thrax (235-238) persecuted clergy |
| 7. |
Decius (249-251) ordered death for any citizen
refusing sacrifice to the state gods. |
| 8. |
Valerian (253-260) outlawed Christian assembly,
persecuting mainly clergy and nobility. |
| 9. |
Aurelian (270-275) allowed the anti-Christian
laws, without seriously enforcing them. |
| 10. |
Diocletian (284-305) reversing Aurelian's
policy, engineered the bloodiest persecution. |
| |
|
| The Edict of Milan (313) promoted tolerance, thus
giving Christianity legal status, ending the age of Roman
persecution. |
