Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The parable of the sower and the seed is famous. Like
most parables of Jesus', this one invites us in with simple imagery
to ask how we are responding to the Gospel message. The reign of
God is breaking into our own time and place. Do we let it in?
If we take the time to garden, seed can work well
as a metaphor for us just as it did for the first-century audience.
We may spend a lot more of our time inside, though - tending offices,
growing projects or reports, pruning schedules. Indoors or outdoors,
our routines are built from long, tedious tasks.
Actual, living plants take their own time. They
grow on their own schedule. We are able to help - we can water and
nurture. We may have to make more effort than Jesus' first
hearers, though, to be with living things. Do we have dull,
gray surroundings that stunt growth? It's a cliché to remind
each other to stop and smell the roses. But do we?
Hey - anybody seen anything green around here?! We can find ourselves
remote from the seeds of a living creation, let alone the seeds of
faith.
A less famous part of Matthew's passage comes right
at the beginning. Before teaching about seeds, Jesus tried to put
things into perspective. He walked out of the house to go sit down
by the sea. Ever done that? Ever sit down quietly and let
nature reclaim you? How often do we let the waves come in,
rhythmically calming us, washing our shores, washing out the stress?
If we're near the water the call is palpable. Even if we
aren't, the need is there. We can find someplace quiet to sit
for a little while.
In Jesus' case, the quiet reflection didn't
last very long. He was too recognizable at this point, his message
too urgent. The waves of people were so big he was crowded out into
the sea itself, with a boat for his podium.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
A Look at the Human Hand
A hand waits for the touch of another hand. The
human hand is so mysterious. It can create and destroy, caress and
strike, make welcoming gestures and condemning signs; it can bless and
curse, heal and wound, beg and give. A hand can become a threatening
fist as well as a symbol of safety and protection. It can be most
feared and most longed for.
One of the most life-giving images is that
of human hands reaching out to each other, touching each other,
interconnecting and merging into a sign of peace and reconciliation.
In contrast, one of the most despairing images is that of a hand stretched
open, waiting to be touched with care, while people walk heedlessly by.
This is not only an image of the loneliness of the individual person,
but of the loneliness of a divided humanity. The hand of the poor
world reaches out to be touched by the hand of the rich world, but the
preoccupations of the rich prevent them from seeing the poor, and humanity
remains broken and fragmented.

Enjoy the 2008 Lancaster Festival! Is
there any other place in Ohio which has a ten day music festival?
As customary, the Lancaster Festival opens with Street Painting in the
Fountain Square area at 11 AM on Thursday, July 17. At 6 PM
there's a free ice cream social outside St. Mary Church, with 7
PM brass fanfare music. In St. Mary Church at 8 PM is the
Opening night concert "Stars of Tomorrow." May God
bless each day of this happy Lancaster Festival. What a
wonderful opportunity for families to enjoy many events together.
What a special week of friendship and hospitality in our community.
There's something literally for everyone. Enjoy! Welcome
all visitors. Daily schedules are available in the Lancaster
Eagle-Gazette, the festival program or www.lanfest.org.
Parish Self-Study Conclusions Submitted to the Bishop. Thank
you to the thirty some parishioners who gave their time and experience
to the recent Self-Study.
Many ideas and suggestions surfaced in the general
meeting on June 17, and in the follow-up meeting of group leaders on
June 30. The two most pressing concerns were adult faith-formation
and evangelizing our youth.
In our noisy and fast-paced culture, it becomes
obvious that prayer-life and religion are suffering. Youth from
13 years to 30 years are over-whelmed by distractions and noise.
There seems little space for God. Parents, too, are time-compressed,
and often exhausted. Where is thy God?
A parish needs to be a sacred place to get ones
batteries re-charged with faith and hope. It needs to be a place
where youth can "meet their God" and truly come to appreciate
one another.
Please lend a hand and also pray, that as
a parish community we can meet these needs and other needs too.
Parish Council will assist as well as all of our parish staff and
leadership. We will also collaborate with other parishes,
especially in our Fairfield-Hocking area. This is a five year
project.

Destination: Down Under. All Systems Go for
World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia. With
just days to go before World Youth Day '08, excitement is high
in Sydney and abroad in preparation for the arrival of more then
125,000 pilgrims. By all counts, the event will be the biggest,
in terms of participants, ever held in Australia.
Pope Benedict XVI will join the pilgrims towards
the end of the July 15-20 gathering. "Excitement is building
among Sydneysiders to once again host the world," said Jim Hanna,
WYD director of communications. "I believe it started with
television coverage of the Pope's visit to the United States,
which was clearly a bigger success than some commentators had expected."

Brothers of the Sacred Heart Mission Appeal will be
here next weekend for the African missions. The
Brothers through their representative, Brother Clifford King, SC, are
asking for your prayers and financial support. Your contributions
will especially benefit young men who are preparing to enter religious
life and needy students in the African countries. There
will be a second collection after Holy Communion
Bishop's Annual Appeal. This is
the final report for the Bishop's annual report. This year
there were a total of 223 envelopes turned in with a total pledge of
$52,133. This is $7,246.45 over our target. Congratulations
to St. Bernadette Parishioners.
I would like to express my appreciation to Tom
and Susan Saddler, Becky Wickham and Darlene Yenrick for their dedication
in helping with the appeal. The appeal is 8-weeks long with
weekly reports due to the diocese.
Thank You,
Stan Wickham
