Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Life is messy. We aren't always
able to tell exactly who is working for us and who is working against us.
In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus acknowledges this mess, but he
doesn't try to sort out which work is from the enemy and which is from
God. He suggests taking the good with the bad. Give it
time. It does matter which is which, but we can't tell right
now. Work for the good harvest, and let God do the sorting.
For result-minded disciples, this is frustrating.
Saint Paul talks about what our efforts can result
in right now. This is too close to home. We see our
own weaknesses. We don't even know what to pray for. We
groan. We can't put what we need into words. We don't
know where to start. How much of the world is struggling as we
are? Pay says that all of creation is groaning.
Do we dare look this deeply? Do we want to
be reminded of wars, hungers, crimes, natural disasters? If we
watch the news, on most nights it's so paralyzing it's tempting
to ignore it all or to give up.
Today's readings offer power in a deep,
realistic way. In the middle of all this struggle, that
is where God is. God knows the good seed and the weeds.
The Spirit prays for us as we groan. We are not
alone in all this. The world is difficult, but struggling here
matters.
What is the wisdom of God? For your
strength is the source of righteousness, and your sovereignty over
all causes you to spare all. For you show your strength when
people doubt the completeness of your power, and you rebuke any
insolence among those who know it. Although you are sovereign
in strength, you judge with mildness (Wisdom 12:16-18a).

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
Please forgive me for telling you this silly joke,
but it works so well with today's Gospel, I have to use it.
Ready? OK, here goes: What did the dandelion from outer
space say to the Earth dandelion? "Take me to your Weeder."
Today's Gospel parable is about a field in
which the wheat and weeds are growing together. Jesus'
solution is to wait until harvest time to pull the weeds first and
burn them. Then, when the weeds are gone, the harvesters can
gather the wheat into the barn.
In our personal lives, we need to follow the
example of the space dandelion. We need to go to the Weeder
so that Jesus can help us remove the weeds of sinfulness that try
to consume us. Then, when we are free, he will gather us into
his harvest.
Therefore, without looking to those who stand
to our right or to our left, let us look only at ourselves and at
Jesus. Is our belonging to him truly evident in our lives?
Is our commitment so transparent as to be easily detected in what we say
and what we do? Should there be any discrepancy, now is the time
to avail ourselves of God's lenient mercy and compassion. Now
is the time to surrender ourselves to listen more attentively and to heed
the good seed of the word that Jesus longs to plant within us.

"The comforting Christian can relieve both
that isolation and desolation by simply being present. Many words
are not needed. A loving heart, interested ears and a gentle touch
will work wonders."
Ann Essman, Pastoral Minister
Fostering Healthy Marriages. Recently
an engaged couple told me that they weren't having a Catholic wedding
ceremony because they thought the Catholic Church, with all its
requirements, makes it too hard to get married. "I should hope
so," I replied, "because marriage is hard." What I
didn't tell them was that I don't think the Church does such a
good job at helping people stay married. My husband, Mark, and I
will be married 13 years this August. Before we got married, we
took the FOCCUS assessment, met with a married couple in our parish,
attended an Engaged Encounter weekend, and met with our parish priest
and the priest who was officiating at our wedding. We and the
Church put a lot of energy into getting our marriage off to a good
start. But that day in 1995 after we said "I do" and
walked back down the aisle was the last time we heard anything from
the Church concerning our marriage. Sure, I know there are
programs available such as Marriage Encounter to help couples maintain
their relationship. But with three kids, a weekend retreat for
Mark and me is just not feasible. Desirable? Yes.
Feasible? No. If the U.S. bishops have their way, though,
married couples soon won't have any excuses for not fostering their
marriages. That's because the bishops are currently right in
the middle of an all-out push to help married couples - not just
Catholics - strengthen and grow their marriages. For more information
on the bishops' National Pastoral Initiative for Marriage, visit www.usccb.org/npim or www.foryourmarriage.org.
