Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
What does it take to get our attention?
Major movements of fire, wind, and earth do get us thinking. It is
in the face of natural disasters that we ask the big questions.
Why is this happening? An earthquake takes dozen of lives.
Where is God? We ask questions of fellow human beings
too: Who will help us? Can you help? We may ask
more troubling ones: Why didn't more people help here?
How often do we face questions from yet another
angle? When we're safe and we see and hear about troubled
places and troubled people, what should we do? Some folks do go
to these places to help. The tough questions may be how and why
did they help?
Are they extraordinary people? How did they
know to go there? How did they have the time to go?
Did they have the Spirit in Jesus, who could calm
things down? Were they like Jesus, who could walk on the waves?
Were they like Peter? Which Peter? The impetuous
disciple who stepped out of the boat? Or the surprised, scared
Peter who looked down and sank? Was Peter aware of what he risked?
What do we fear more, going or not going? Do we fear walking
on the waves? Sinking if we get out too deep?
God knew Elijah would be impressed by the noise and
drama of rocks crushing and winds destroying everything in his path.
Who can say why God's movements ever cause destruction?
Still, it was not, and is not, in the noise and
chaos that God's voice comes to would-be prophets. God comes
to the heart. That place, as Paul says, may be where great sorrow
and constant anguish are. But it is a place where both God's
voice and human voices are understood, where both God and humans are
moved to heal.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
God is near, waiting to be found, longing to be
welcomed. All we need to do is be willing to be surprised by the
intimacy.
Where do I go seeking for God? God surprised
the prophet Elijah by being revealed in a tiny whispering sound.
Paul was surprised when the divine presence became
a person and was revealed to him in Jesus Christ. God's power
and presence was revealed to the disciples in the person of Jesus who
calmed the sea and their fears.
When asked how she finds God, Benedictine author
Joan Chittister said she learned from the holy women who went before her
that God is in the very atmosphere around us and in the little things
that shape our lives. God is in the contradictions that assail
us, in the circumstances that challenge us, in the attitudes that impel
us, in the life goals that demonstrate our real aspirations, in the
burdens that wear us down, in the actions that give witness to the
values in our heart. God is in the stuff of life.
God is where we are, including in the very weaknesses that vie
for our souls.

Parish Council Retreat on Saturday, August 23, to Focus on
Parish Self-Study Conclusions Submitted to the Bishop.
Thank you to the thirty some parishioners who gave their time and
experience to the recent Self-Study.
Many ideas and suggestion surfaced in the general
meeting on June 17, and in the follow-up meeting of group leaders on June
30. The two most pressing concerns were adult faith-formation
and evangelizing our youth.
In our noisy and fast-paced culture, it becomes
obvious that prayer-life and religion are suffering. Youth from 13
years to 30 years are over-whelmed b y distractions and noise. There
seems little space for God. Parents, too, are time-compressed, and
often exhausted. Where is thy God?
A parish needs to be a sacred place to get ones
batteries re-charged with faith and hope. It needs to be a place
where youth can "meet their God" and truly come to appreciate one
another.
Please lend a hand and also pray, that as a
parish community we can meet these needs and other needs too. Parish
Council will assist as well as all of our parish staff and leadership.
We will also collaborate with other parishes, especially in our
Fairfield-Hocking area.

Central Ohio Blood Region, so please consider taking an hour of your

ROSARY PRAYER
O Queen of the Most Holy Rosary help me translate
into my life the virtues so beautifully exemplified by thee in the
Joyful Mysteries. By thy love of purity at THE ANNUNCIATION
whereby thou didst accept the divine maternity while preserving the vow of
chastity preserve me from the contagion of sin. By the charity at
THE VISITATION whereby John the Baptist was sanctified and joy was brought
to the household of thy cousin, Elizabeth, help me to show charity to my
neighbor. By the virtue of poverty that prevailed at the NATIVITY
teach me to have tender love for God's poor. By the spirit of
obedience to the law of God at the PRESENTATION IN THE TEMPLE assist me
always to be a faithful child of our holy mother, the Church. By
thy joy in THE FINDING OF JESUS amidst the doctors in the Temple help me
ever to seek true happiness in the Blessed Sacrament where Christ dwells
amongst us.
Keep me, O ever-blessed Mother in conformity with
the Divine Will as was thy Son during the Sorrowful Mysteries: THE AGONY
IN THE GARDEN when He said: "Not my will, but Thine be done."
When sin calls me away from God may I be mindful of the SCOURGING.
Against the spirit of pride impress upon me the memory of my Saviour
and HIS CROWN OF THORNS. When my feet are about to stray from the
ways of wisdom remind me of THE CARRYING OF THE CROSS. Let me never
forget THE CURCIFIXION when the dying Christ forgave His enemies, promised
Paradise to a thief, and gave thee to me as my Mother.
Give me, O Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, the courage
and confidence that comes through the Glorious Mysteries: THE
RESURRECTION. Help me always to look forward to the great hope of
our holy religion given in THE ASCENSION. Teach me to live in the
spirit of the first Novena which thou and the Apostles made in preparation
for THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. Inspire me with the glory of
thine ASSUMPTION and the joy which was thine when at THE CORNATION thou
wert made Queen of heaven and earth.

A MEDITATION:
"Jesus' Faithful Sentinel"
O Sanctuary Light of wax and wick, Jesus chose you to be his
faithful sentinel, to announce his true presence hidden in the
Tabernacle of the Sanctuary. O privileged object, forever
shining forth God's glory, never asking for a thing...you give
it all til the changing of the guard. You are a solemn
witness to all who come to adore, the ones who ask, the ones who
thank, and the ones who just want to feel God's love in the
true presence of Christ. Yes, Sanctuary Lamp, God's
signal of his holy presence, you give it all and ask for nothing.
We humans, God's highest and beloved creation, ask for
all and rarely give anything in return. God chose you, O
lamp of Christ, to teach us true generosity. So, let our
hearts burn with the love of Christ. O Sanctuary Sentinel,
let us take your example from the Sanctuary out into the world and
let the love and presence of Jesus shine thru our being, our very
eyes, God's lamp of all lamps, til the changing of our guard.
Amen.
