Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah is losing his mind,   He talks to God in strong language.   You duped me!   And I let it happen.   Fine, you win.   I will speak.   No, I will not speak.   But I'm weary trying to contain your Word.
Jeremiah wrestles with God.   He is first enticed, then overpowered.   He feels like an idiot - everyone is laughing at him.   He is moved, pushed, pulled.   If he refuses to speak the Word of God, it will burn its way out of him anyway.   Is he out of control?   Is this a good thing?   What can he do?   Is he lost?
What des this Scripture reading, this prophet, offer us?   Is Jeremiah our role model?   Is Scripture tempting us to madness?   What does it usually teach?   Usually we are challenged to be thoughtful, to be sober, to be balanced.   We know we must learn wisdom.
Then why is Jeremiah so over the top?
At some time Jesus asks each of us if we are ready to throw our whole life into a decision for him.   And answering this request could make us look like idiots.   If this confuses or frightens us, we have no less a companion than Peter.   Peter has just broken through with the insight that Jesus is the Messiah.   And immediately he tries to explain to Jesus what that means.   Jesus tells Peter to get behind him.
Is Peter lost?   No.   From there, he is again able to follow Jesus.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy

Beginning Tuesday evenings September 9th and thereafter, I will conduct a Scripture Study in the Mary Good Center (front area).   We will reflect on the Sunday readings that will occur the following weekend.
This study will begin promptly at 7pm and end at 8pm.   I will have the readings prepared for you; but feel free to bring your own Bibles!   I offer the same format on Tuesday mornings at 10am, but not everyone is free at that time.   I am looking forward to meeting with you.   I think you will get a lot out of the experience.

This past Sunday evening 20 parishioners from St. Bernadette's gathered at the Berwick Manor in Columbus for the Catholic Woman of the Year award sponsored by the Diocese.   Kathy Kehnast was nominated from our parish to represent this honor!   Even though she wasn't the final contestant, we believed she served as the first runner up!!   All the nominees were called forward to have their picture taken with the Bishop!
It was a wonderful gathering where support and love for Kathy was quite evident.   We are certainly proud to have her here in our midst where she serves the folks of St. Bernadette beyond the call of service!!

Sr. Nancy, O.P.

Labor Day, September 1st.   As our US Bishops wrote in their document, A Jubilee for Workers: Challenges and Opportunities for the New Millennium: "It is worth remembering on Labor Day… that a person is more valuable for what she or he is then for what they have, for the work they do rather than for what they possess.   We must join together… to build a society that respects each person and their work."   The Marriage and family life office encourages you to talk with your children about how work gives witness to our faith, how each of us can make the world a better place by who we are and what we do, and how all that we do can manifest the love of God.   Spend some time reflecting on how you bring holiness and wholeness to the work you do.
Lord, let our work be a source of joy to our family and a song of praise to you. Amen.

Grandparents' Day is September 7:   The Marriage and Family Life Office reminds you that Sunday, September 7, 2008 is Grandparents' Day.   In our grandparents we have sensed and felt the thread of history and the treasure of tradition that lies within our families.   We pray that those who guided our early steps and called forth our talents be richly rewarded by God, our Divine Parent.
