Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Fairness is an idea we seem to understand
early. Young children are good at "fair."
Actually, more specifically, they are good at "It isn't
fair!"
Ever set up a birthday party for little kids?
They can tell if someone got more French fries or a bigger
piece of cake. Are you decorating the kids' chairs?
They can tell if one balloon is better than another. A red
balloon might be better than a blue balloon, so make sure you get the
right child the right balloon, so it will be fair.
How do you know which balloon is better for each kid? I
don't know. They will, thought. Actually,
you'd better make it a blue balloon, blue balloon, blue balloon -
all the way around the table. And don't make one balloon
bigger than the others. (Unless it's the guest of honor's.)
But then when the next brother or sister has a birthday, make
sure you do it that again) Putting jelly beans on the plate?
Better count them. The kids will.
Which of us in School or at
work has not been felt cheated?
As we grow older, the stakes are higher.
Which of us in school or at work has not felt cheated? Actually,
there's more to it than that. It's not just a
feeling. Who hasn't been cheated? It
is good to have this sense of justice. It is good to work for
justice and to recognize where it is most needed. And yet,
the Gospel asks, should we recognize even more?
Today's passage in Matthew takes up the
sense of fairness we have, but it also seems to take it out of our
hands. Something even bigger is operating. We are called
to be more than fair. Jesus' story points us in a
direction past what is due us. He makes two points that are
hard to accept:
1. God's justice is smarter than our
justice.
2. We are offered a second chance.
It is never too late.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
Mercy is also the unnamed virtue that inspired the
Matthean Jesus' parable of the vineyard. Most of us would
bristle at what appears to be an injustice perpetrated on hard working
people. But the key to understanding the parable is in the first
sentence. It is more than a story about a vineyard.   The
parable teaches a lesson about the kingdom of heaven. Entrance
to the kingdom cannot be earned, no matter how early one rises or how
long one works. Entrance is God's gift, given freely and
mercifully to those who seem by human standards to deserve it, as well
as to those who do not. Generous mercy is that quality of God
without which we would have no hope of survival.

Sr. Nancy, O.P.
200th Anniversary of 1st
Mass in the State of Ohio - On Sunday, September 28, 2008
at 2:00pm Bishop Frederick F. Campbell will celebrate a Mass to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the First Mass
in the State of Ohio. The historic celebration will be held
on the original grounds where the first Mass took place in 1808.
You are cordially invited to join us for the anniversary Mass, a
memorial dedication and reception to be held at 5000 Stage Coach Rd.,
just outside of Somerset, Ohio. From the Somerset square,
head west on Route 22 for two miles, turn left on Toll Gate Rd. and
follow the signs. Please call the Catholic Record Society at
614-241-2571 or send an e-mail to firstmass@aol.com
if you plan to attend this historic happening.
Protecting God's Children sessions can
be scheduled by going on line to www.virtus.org.
There are 13 sessions with space still available for September
in various parts of the diocesan area. If you want
to volunteer with our youth you will need to take this class.

St. Bernadette Parish -- Celebrating God's Gifts
Eucharistic Adoration Adorers Needed on
Wednesday, 1 am and 2 am; Thursday, 7 am and 2 pm. Call Marti
Gundelfinger at 654-2277.

Elizabeth Gambill, a kindergartener at St. Bernadette's to school
and help out at home. If interested, call her mom, Mary Ann
Gambill, at 740-687-0966 (home) or 740-407-1128 (cell).
Eagle Scout Project: Grotto walkway
Eagle Scout prospect, Steven Darnell, has proposed
a mulch walking path around the Lourdes Grotto – the path would meander
around and exit near the blue spruces behind the church. This
would facilitate "walking around in front of the grotto" and
connect the two driveways. Many people walk on St. Bernadette
property for exercise. This would help people to make the circuit
without walking on Wheeling Rd.
It will be a tribute to Our Lady of Lourdes and
to our patroness, St. Bernadette.
One parish family has offered to underwrite the
cost. To volunteer with construction please refer to Steven
Darnell, son of Dr. Mark and Theresa Darnell. Work will begin
any day.
Helping People: It's what God wants
Congratulations and thanks to so many who helped
neighbors and friends during this time of power outage.
It was a challenge. Perhaps we are better
for it. God works in ways that are effective.
The wind, the rain and the snow are all invented
by the Lord, and He uses them for our long term good. They bring
us to compassion, neighborly out-reach, selfless dedication and
friendliness.
Quiet prayer can help at such times to calm our
anxieties. It was a stretch for us to be patient. Some
commented to me about this event drawing families together more, and
reminding oldsters about family life of the past.
