Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today's passage from Gospel of Matthew,
Jesus asks his audience to pick the correct fictional role model.
Two sons are sent to work. One fellow talks
a good game ("Sure, I'll do it!") but doesn't follow
through. The other son doesn't want to go to work and
says he doesn't want to go to work. But then he
changes his mind.
The audience seems to pick the right man (the
second one). I wish we knew his name. He could be not
only the disciple who actually did his father's will in the story,
but also the patron saint of second-guessing ourselves. (Should
we admire his honesty too?)
A few verses earlier, we discover Jesus teaching
in the temple to an audience filled with chief priests and elders.
He is in their faces because these guys saw the repentance of
real sinners when John was baptizing, but it didn't shake their
own way of doing things or their own view of themselves. Whom
do we want to identify with in that part of the story?
Do you ever go around and around, trying to decide
what to do? Sometimes the decision isn't clear; sometimes
it's just hard to follow through.
Today we also have Saint Paul's words about
what will bring us a sense of peace, a sense of consolation.
The Philippians are told, "Do nothing from selfish ambition or
conceit" and to "regard others as better than yourselves"
(2:3). How did Paul know the Philippians needed to work on
that? Well, because we all do.
Deep in Jesus' story, we are getting at the
paradox of what he requires of his disciples. We must lose
ourselves to find ourselves. What does it take to do
that - to really change our minds?

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
To follow Jesus in discipleship means that sometimes
I will be rejected and misunderstood; I may not see results in striving to
do good; and I will need to give when nothing seems to be returned.
"To follow" is to serve when the body and the spirit are weary and
to never know what lies ahead. "To follow" is to live with
mystery and to walk in faith, knowing that we are deeply loved.
Even though discipleship is not always easy and even though sometimes we
feel like there's a part of us that's been eaten out or chewed
on, we can still live with a heart of peace and deep joy. The
secret is that attitude of: We know we are creating something of
value because our hearts are set on the one who invites us to follow.
When Paul wrote to the Philippians, he penned a proclamation of
a disciple's heart:
I believe nothing can happen that will outweigh
the supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus
my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of everything…
All I want is to know Christ and
the power of his resurrection and to share his
sufferings by reproducing the pattern of his
death…I am still running, trying to capture the
prize for which Christ Jesus captured me (Phil 3:8,10,12).

Eagle Scout Project: Grotto walkway
Eagle Scout prospect, Steven Darnell, has proposed
a mulch walking path around the Lourdes Grotto – the path would meander
around and exit near the blue spruces behind the church. This
would facilitate "walking around in front of the grotto" and
connect the two driveways. Many people walk on St. Bernadette
property for exercise. This would help people to make the circuit
without walking on Wheeling Rd.
It will be a tribute to Our Lady of Lourdes and
to our patroness, St. Bernadette.
One parish family has offered to underwrite the
cost. To volunteer with construction please refer to Steven
Darnell, son of Dr. Mark and Theresa Darnell. Work will begin
any day.
