Bulletin Deadline: Monday, 12:00 Noon.
Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Is the World a good place?
It can be a painful place. We can get
discouraged here. Yet we can get stuck here; it's strange
that we can cling to our problems and fear leaving our ruts.
But the world can be a beautiful place too.
That can lead to a different, even stranger problem:
we are tempted to worship what is here. Some favorite, old
standby temptations are still with us. Power and money can
draw us in. But we have some modern ones too. Science
and technology can be worshiped. We can be pulled by more
subtle temptations. Is health not a great good? Family
and love are certainly good.
What things can handle the job of being
worshipped, of being at the center of life? Let's
be careful here; we needn't reject good things as worthless.
Wealth and power and knowledge and good health can make humans
flourish. The question is, can they complete us?
It is especially when we are successful
at achieving the goods of this world that we may become aware of
something missing. Do we have what we wanted? Do we
have want we wanted? Are we still asking for more?
Why do we sense there's something we have not found?
St. Augustine said we have a heart that is
made for God and cannot find peace in anything else.
We are pulled to grow, to be more.
We're link amphibians, living in good waters but carrying
lungs that are meant to be filled with air - with the breath of
God. We live here, but we are drawn to a richer world.
Our world is good. It is
sacramental. We already see here how simple things
- water, oil, bread, wine, forgiveness, responsibility, human
love, even our weaknesses and death - can be taken up and
changed.
So Saint Paul reminds us: whatever
is true, honorable, just, pure, pleasing, commendable, excellent,
and worthy of praise - think about these.

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy
Opportunity to Pray the Liturgy of the Hours
It has been Fr. Walter's yearning desire to
pray morning Lauds in church on Mondays. This would be done
following the celebration of the liturgy. The simple, brief
format contains readings from Scripture, psalms, and intercessory
prayers, and lasts about ten minutes. This presents itself
as another avenue for spiritual growth and I'm trying to discern
if a willingness exists at St. Bernadette to share in this universal
prayer of the Church. If you would be interested in participating
in or leading the Liturgy of the Hours, please call Sr. Nancy at 654-1893.
Sr. Nancy, O.P.
Saint Paul the Apostle, the Man and his Ministry,
led by John Reade will begin with five Tuesday evening sessions during

letters and teachings. Reading materials from the Vatican will be
provided at no charge and recommended books can be obtained at a discount.
The fall sessions commence on Tuesday, October 7th from
7 to 8:30pm in the church. Other sessions will be October
21st, November 11th, December 2nd
& 9th. Come and join this opportunity for learning
and sharing. For more information please contact John Reade at

The Catholic Church has long held October to
be the month in which we prayerfully celebrate our firm belief that
all human life is sacred. The Marriage and Family Life Office
reminds you that, as Pope John Paul II wrote in his 1995 Encyclical
"The Gospel of Life":
The family proclaims life when parents
teach children to communicate openly, to value all life and to
fulfill their God-given mission.
The family celebrates life through prayer,
thanking God for the gift of life and for each other.
The family serves life by promoting the
welfare and well-being of its own members and the members of the
greater "family of life".
A Prayer of Reverence for Life from the Marriage and Family Life Office:
Lord and giver of all life, help us to value each person, created in love by you. In your mercy, guide and assist our efforts to promote the dignity and value of all human life, born and unborn. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
