Weekly Bulletin
October 19, 2008

Bulletin Deadline:   Monday, 12:00 Noon.

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

It's tough to follow Christ and also live in the world.   Most of us are called to do it with a whole lot of the world pulling on us.   Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's?   OK.   Now I just have to figure out which is which.
When many Catholics hear the word vocation, they think about its meaning as a call to religious life, particularly to ordained priesthood.   These are vital vocations.   Those called in these ways are set apart; they are called to serve the Body of Christ in a visibly unique role.
Vocations for most of us in the Body of Christ look different.   Are they less obvious?   They are absolutely vital.   The work is tough.   Our best intentions can be misunderstood.   Even with the best of motives we can fail.   The next day we still have to get up and go to work.   Am I serving God or Caesar?   Neither?   Both?
Some care called to be teachers, some nurses, some builders of companies, some builders of buildings.   Some are called to wait on other people who have been standing in line for a while.   In advice attributed to Saint Francis, we hear "Preach the Gospel always, and if necessary use words."   What does that look like?
We don't always know when we are making an impact on others.   On a couple of painful occasions I discovered I had been making a good impression only after I messed it up.   After an outburst or incident someone said, "Hey, that's not like you!"   But I guess it was.
Cyrus the Persian looked every bit like other warriors when he used power, when he played his pivotal role in Jewish history, releasing God's chosen people to return to their own land.   Isaiah calls him anointed - he is a messiah.   He doesn't even know God or the job he has in the bigger scheme of things, and he is an anointed one.
What could we accomplish, who know we are called?

The Fruits of the Spirit

The Fruits of the Spirit are the new wine of the Gospel that fills us with divine energy and a certain spontaneity.   Structures need to be adjusted to this freedom, which, as St. Paul says, is not license, but an ever increasing sensitivity to the initiatives of the Spirit.   The hallmark of the divine action is, to quote Thomas Merton, "mercy, within mercy, within mercy."   The Fruits of the Spirit prove that Christ is living in us and transforming us into witnesses of his continuing presence in the world.   To manifest these dispositions of Jesus is the living evidence of his Resurrection.

Saint Paul the Apostle, the Man and his Ministry, led by John Reade will continue with the next session on October 21st from 7 to 8:30pm in the Church.   We are exploring the world of early Christianity, Paul's dramatic conversion, his missionary work, and the shape of his Scriptural letters and teachings.   Reading materials from the Vatican will be provided at no charge and recommended books can be obtained at a discount.   More sessions will be on November 11th, December 2nd & 9th.   Come and join this opportunity for learning and sharing.   For more information please contact John Reade at 740-687-5234 or e-mail me at john-reade@appianmfg.com.

World Priest Day is October 26th.   Offer a special prayer!   Say thanks, give thanks for the many gifts our priests give of themselves every day.   Sponsored by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter and Serra Club.

Just the name of Jesus will bring peace into your mind
He has His special website, it's of a holy kind
When you feel you're out of touch and want to draw Him near
Take out your holy laptop and type in your special prayer
He gets each message sent his way, he'll take them to his heart
'cause he knows you want to pray to him, now's the time to start
His internet of angels are waiting to disperse
His gifts, his love, his graces, thruout his universe
When you check your INbox you'll find a great reply
"PEACE BE WITH YOU NOW AND EVER, I'M WITH YOU BY AND BY"
God of old and modern times, all ages He is there
Today why don't you dial him up 'cause he's the God of care
Don't worry 'bout those misspelled words
It's the meaning He takes to heart
So get on your holy keyboard now and type what's in your heart
Dial up his site that never crashes, morning, noon or night
And you will find a special answer much to your delight
His love is there for one and all, it's always in the making
Reach out and take a healthy share, it's there for just the taking
Check your INbox often, he's left messages untold
They're just for you and you alone, some mild and then some bold
Thank you Lord for modern ways to receive your soothing balm
You'll shower me with blessings fast 'specially thru .CALM
