Weekly Bulletin
November 2, 2008

Bulletin Deadline:   Monday, 12:00 Noon.

All Souls

Yesterday was All Saints Day, when we acknowledge the saints.
Today is All Souls Day, the day we hope and pray that everyone who has gone before us is or will be with God.
Catholics do a thing that others, including other Christians, find very strange: We talk to "the faithful departed."   There is logic behind our practice.
When humans are particularly nervous, we ask for help.   Sometimes we go directly to the person who can help us, and sometimes we ask others to intercede for us.   Most people who believe in God pray, so we might ask, "Mom, I have a test tomorrow, will you pray for me?"   (You can bet she is also praying as you drive out of town for spring break.)
Do we know how prayer works?   No.   Do we know it matters?   Yes.   Instead of asking our friends to pray for us, could we go directly to God?   Of course.   No doubt we do that anyway.
So why do we look to other people?   Because we are all in this together.   We care about each other.   Of course, Christ has the central place in our prayer life.   He is our intercessor.   He is also the one who taught us to pray with and for each other.
When we pray, we have a lot of company.   Other types of Christians pray for each other.   Folks from a lot of ancient faiths prayed for each other.   So what makes Catholics different?   We talk to people who are dead.
And here is why.   We don't think they're dead.   They are joined with Christ and with us when they were here.   Are they any less concerned for us now?   Of course not.   So we ask them, saints and nonsaints alike, to intercede on our behalf with God.
Christ triumphed over death - his and ours.   He is our hope.   In the Body of Christ, we share hope.

Dan Finucane

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy

Unshakable hope: In a sermon shared with his fellow believers in November 1933, Dietrich Bonhoeffer asked: "Where are our dead?" and "Where will we be after our death?"   (A Testament to Freedom, Harpercollins, San Francisco: 1955).
Today's celebration in honor of the faithful and, perhaps, not so faithful departed invites our consideration of these same questions.   As his text, Bonhoeffer chose today's first reading, and, like the author of Wisdom, he affirmed that the dead are in peace, at rest in the hand of God, God's peace, insisted Bonhoeffer, means that the battle is over; God's peace means refreshment for those whom life has made weary.   It means security for those who have wandered through this life unprotected; it means a home for the homeless and dignity for those who have had theirs stolen by injustice, violence or the apathy of those who could have made a difference.
"They are in peace" helps to soothe the pain of those who mourn the fallen soldiers; "they are in peace" encourages the parent of the child who died too soon, too senselessly.   "They are in peace" brings some small comfort to the survivors of this world's hatred and ethnic cleansing as they wonder how so many can be lost and so few care or mark their passing.   "They are in peace" may help to mitigate the shame of Darfur, Tibet, Afghanistan, Iraq, Congo and places life these because these many, many innocents are now with God in peace.
Sr. Nancy, O.P.

Next Weekend, November 8 & 9, the St. Vincent de Paul Society truck will be at St. Bernadette to accept donations of clean, usable clothing and household items.   Thank you for your continued support.

St. Bernadette Parish -- Celebrating God's Gifts

Eucharistic Adoration Adorers Needed on Wednesday, 1 am and 2 am; Thursday, 7 am, 9 am and 2 pm.   Call Marti Gundelfinger at 654-2277.

The Comforts of November should be embraced.

Even though the winds get very chilly and the skies grow gray, November brings us some true warmth.   The warmth of pleasant memories of loved ones deceased.   The warmth of family Thanksgiving around an abundant table.   The warmth of His love which is always there.
Please consider sharing happy family memories with children and grandchildren of loved ones deceased as nature affords us indoor evenings and the Church urges us to remember our departed.   Happy thoughts drive the darkness of night away.
His risen light comforts the soul.
Father Walter

Dear Choir,
This is just a friendly reminder that we will begin choir practice this coming Wednesday, November 5, at 7PM in the school meeting room.   At this rehearsal, in addition to diving into our new music, we will be giving out the new choir hymnals (so please bring in your old ones to trade in).   At the end of rehearsal I could use a hand getting the freshly cleaned choir robes back into their garment bags, so if you can stay an extra few minutes, your help would be appreciated!   I look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday night :)

Have a great weekend,
Liz

Storm Sewer Repairs Completed

On October 6, 2008, Bob Huber of Huber Contracting started work on the repair of St. Bernadette's storm sewer.   Our storm sewer runs from the back parking lot, behind the church, down the south side of the church, across the front of the church and school, and meets up with the drains in the front parking lot.   In the 45 years since its installation, the sewer had been overtaken by tree roots, and had collapsed in several places.   The back parking lot often flooded in heavy rains because of this damaged sewer.
Bob Huber, with contracted help from Nick Beiter and Larry Smith, worked two long, 14-hour days to complete the project before the rain on October 8th.   They replaced 90 feet of 8" pipe and 95 feet of 6" pipe.   They also installed 2 cleanouts for future maintenance.   (There were no cleanouts in the original sewer.)
While we were digging the storm sewer pipe, we also made a repair in the sanitary line that serves the rectory and Mary Good Center; installing a cleanout in that line as well.   While we had the front yard torn up, we replaced some bad wiring for our front sidewalk lights.   We eliminated some patches in the wiring where the line had been damaged and repaired in the past.   All the sewer pipe, fittings, and electrical conduit were bedded-in with gravel and then the trenches backfilled.
We would like to thank Bob Huber and his crew.   This much needed project was completed at the cost of $7,909.40 (the next closest bid was $14,650).
Steve Huber, Maintenance

The Lazarus Program would like to thank everyone for their help.   With so many funerals, we have too many dishes and no where to keep them.   Please pick up your dish in the school hallway.

Join the Catholic Foundation Thursday evening, November 13th, at St. Agatha Parish at 7:00pm for Passionate Estate Planning... for yourself, your family, and the Church.
This intimate, focused presentation will be targeted to the needs and concerns of Catholic families.   It will be delivered by nationally known attorney and author Conrad Teitell, one of the most dynamic speakers in the industry.   He will address the reasons families tend to fail to plan, and helps Catholics who may not have a strong financial background see that estate planning can play an important role in conveying to their heirs not just assets, but their values and beliefs.   Teitell is known for his wit and humor, and this presentation will be as enjoyable as it is enlightening.
The event is free of charge and open to anyone looking to learn more about estate planning.   Reserve a seat for yourself and a friend or family member no later than November 3rd by calling the Catholic Foundation at 614-443-8893 or 1-866-298-8893 or visit www.catholic-foundation.org for more information.
