Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

TODAY AT MASS we read from the oldest surviving Christian document we have - a letter from the apostle Paul to Thessalonica.   Biblical scholars date it as coming from around the year 50 or 51, a couple of short decades after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.   (The Gospels relate material from the time of Jesus, but in the written form we receive these, they come from after Paul's letters.)
Through this window into the earliest years of the Church, what do we see?   In this first-century community, one particular poignant question weighed on them.   What are we still doing here?
In their experience of Christ risen, his followers saw the reign of God begin.   They also knew God would complete the job as promised and that the fullness of God's justice and God's presence, drying every tear, would free those who gave their lives to Christ.
They believed Christ would do this in their own lifetimes, but they were worried because some of their follow Christians had died.   It is ironic - a sign of God's power - that Paul, the former persecutor of the Church, was the one to embolden them.
We have distance of almost twenty centuries to give us the knowledge that Christ's return was not meant to be immediate.   We may smile at bumper stickers that expect the coming of Christ to leave some cars driverless.   We may only vaguely hear the ancient yearning in the "mystery of faith": Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again.
Yet what are we worried about?   Where do we long for Christ to step in?
Today these questions are bound to Christ's parable in Matthew.   What does it look like for us to develop the talent we have been handed rather than burying it in the ground?   What should we be awake to today?

"Jottings" from Sister Nancy

Last Thursday 45 Dominicans Sisters from Ohio embarked upon a bus trip from the grounds of St. Mary of the Springs, Columbus to attend a pre-chapter meeting held in St. Louis.   When we arrived we were met by approximately 290 other Dominican Sisters to discuss important issues surrounding our "merger" to become one Dominican community!

This consideration has been in long discourse over the past 5 years discussing its future probability has become a reality!   It is a known fact that we are not bringing in many vocations these days, thus affecting all religious congregations; and because of these smaller numbers we've been forced to look at the future for some alternative in order to survive!

St. Mary of the Springs of Columbus community has merged with six other Dominican Sister congregations.   They are:
            Dominican Sisters in Springfield, Kentucky
The Sisters of St. Dominican of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, New Orleans
The Eucharistic Missionaries of St. Dominic, New Orleans
            Dominican Sisters in Akron, Ohio
            Dominican Sisters in Oxford, Michigan
Dominican Sisters in Great Bend, Kansas

We will be known and called the Dominican Sisters of Peace.   This has been all approved from Rome and will become permanent on Easter Sunday, April 12th of 2009.
Why did we settle on this particular title?   The following are some of the reasons why we feel PEACE was the determining outcome.
  • Our name commits us to being at peace in our daily living!
  • What better gift can we offer the world than the commitment to strive to be persons of peace, preaching and working for peace in all areas of our lives and the world.
  • Being at peace or “of peace” is at the heart of contemplation!
  • We must be people of peace before we can be people for peace!
We all maintain the basic philosophy begun by St. Dominic dating back to the 12th century, that gives us our common purpose.   All other matters can be "worked out" as we continue to live into this new and exciting adventure.   We strive to realize our mission as Dominicans by promoting fidelity to our charism, unity and direction for the community; and an environment for our members whose diverse gifts enrich the Order!
Sr. Nancy, O.P.

LOURDES JUBILEE ENDS ON DECEMBER 8th

The 150th Anniversary observance of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Lourdes, France, to Saint Bernadette Souberous, ends on December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
We began the Lourdes anniversary celebration on this past February 11th, the Feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes.   On Saint Bernadette's Feast day, April 16th, we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Mark Parish with the students of both parishes.
The power of Mary's intercession is one of God's gifts to our world.   Lourdes is known for Mary's compassion for the sick.   Over 10 million pilgrims have visited her Shrine at Lourdes this year.   Pope Benedict was there in mid-September for three days.
Please ask Mary to help our sick.   May she also assist in family reconciliations and moral conversions.   "We thank you, Saint Bernadette for your patience in suffering and your great example of faith."
Masses on Monday, December 8th, a Holyday of Obligation, will be at 8:20 am which will include the school children, and at 6:30 pm.   (There is no vigil Mass on Sunday evening anywhere.)
