2005 Parish Festival: June 10 and 11

Mark your calendars now for the 2005 St. Bernadette Parish Festival to be held on Friday and Saturday evenings, June 10 and June 11, from 5 - 11 p.m.   Our festival will feature games, music, inflatable bouncing rides, tasty fair-style food, and a bake sale!   We will also have adult games of chance featuring a texas Hold'em Poker Tournament and a $2,000 raffle.   There will be free entertainment both nights: "Paradise Island" will present variety rock on Friday, and "Highway 70" will perform classic country on Saturday.   Hopefully you will also get to meet Father Antonio from our sister parish in El Salvador.   For more information, call Becky Kuhn at 536-7278.   Don't forget to bring your family and friends for food and fun... See you at the Festival!

Farewell to Fr. Justin Reis

After a twelve year tenure, Fr. Justin Reis will be leaving St. Bernadette Parish.   His new assignment is at St. Peter's in Worthington.   The weekend of July 10 will be Fr. Reis's last weekend with our community.   Be sure to say good-bye after mass.
During his time at St. Bernadette, Fr. Reis presided over a number of projects which were a benefit to the spiritual growth of our parish community including the adoption of our sister parish in El Salvador, Matthew Kelly's visit, and the continued formation of small faith groups.   There were also a number of physical improvements as well; most notably, the parish office building and replacing the church roof.
Our new pastor, Father Walter, comes to us from St. John Neumann Parish in Sunbury.

Did You Ever Wonder...

Why May is Mary's Month?
Jesus and Mary

May is Mary's month, and I

Muse at that and wonder why:

Her feasts follow reason

Dated due to season-

So begins "May Magnificat" written by priest and poet Gerard Manley Hopkins over one hundred years ago.   Today we still wonder why - and investigate the reasons for associating May with Mary.   The first reason lies in tradition.   Throughout history, many religions have dedicated months of the year to particular patrons or devotions.   In early Church, Copts and byzantines both had months dedicated to Mary.   The first written records of Marian devotions in May are from the thirteenth centery in Spain.

The second reason, at least in the northern hemisphere, lies in nature, because May signals the arrival of Spring with its new life and growth.   During the sixteenth century, a German book changed the focus of springtime celebrations from secular to spiritual.   At about the same time in Rome, St. Philip Neri encouraged floral and musical tributes to Our Lady.   Likely due in part to his influence, May became known as the month of Mary in popular culture.   During the eighteenth century, many books of meditations for teh month of May were written by Italian Jesuits.   Through reprints and translations, these meditations spread through Europe, and then European missionaries spread them around the world.

The third reason lies in luturgy, since May is really a part of the Easter season, often the feasts of Ascension and Pentecost occur in May, as in this year on May 8 and May 15.   Cardinal John Henry Newman wrote: "It is the time in which there are such frequent Alleluias, because Christ has risen from the grave... Here then we have a reason why May is dedicated to the Blessed Mary.   She is the first of creatures, the most acceptable child of God... It is fitting then that this month should be hers in which we especially glory and rejoice in His great Providence to us, in our redemption and sanctification..."   Likewise, after acknowledging many wonders of Spring, "May Magnificat" concludes:

This ecstasy all through mothering earth

Tells Mary her mirth till Christ's birth

To remember and exultation

In God who was her salvation.

A Thought from Thomas Merton:

Prayer is not only the "lifting up of the mind and heart to God," but it is also the response to God in us, the discovery of God in us, it leads ultimately to the discovery and fulfillment of our own true being in God.
