There will be free entertainment both nights: "Paradise Island" will present variety rock on Friday, and "Highway 70" will perform classic country on Saturday. Farewell
to Fr. Justin Reis After a twelve year tenure, Fr. Justin Reis will be leaving St. Bernadette Parish. His new assignment is at St. Peter's in Worthington. The weekend of July 10 will be Fr. Reis's last weekend with our community. Be sure to say good-bye after mass. During his time at St. Bernadette, Fr. Reis presided over a number of projects which were a benefit to the spiritual growth of our parish community including the adoption of our sister parish in El Salvador, Matthew Kelly's visit, and the continued formation of small faith groups. There were also a number of physical improvements as well; most notably, the parish office building and replacing the church roof. Our new pastor, Father Walter, comes to us from St. John Neumann Parish in Sunbury.

The second reason, at least in the northern hemisphere, lies in nature, because May signals the arrival of Spring with its new life and growth. During the sixteenth century, a German book changed the focus of springtime celebrations from secular to spiritual. At about the same time in Rome, St. Philip Neri encouraged floral and musical tributes to Our Lady. Likely due in part to his influence, May became known as the month of Mary in popular culture. During the eighteenth century, many books of meditations for teh month of May were written by Italian Jesuits. Through reprints and translations, these meditations spread through Europe, and then European missionaries spread them around the world. The third reason lies in luturgy, since May is really a part of the Easter season, often the feasts of Ascension and Pentecost occur in May, as in this year on May 8 and May 15. Cardinal John Henry Newman wrote: "It is the time in which there are such frequent Alleluias, because Christ has risen from the grave... Here then we have a reason why May is dedicated to the Blessed Mary. She is the first of creatures, the most acceptable child of God... It is fitting then that this month should be hers in which we especially glory and rejoice in His great Providence to us, in our redemption and sanctification..." Likewise, after acknowledging many wonders of Spring, "May Magnificat" concludes:
