Welcome to St. Bernadette, Father Walter

The year 2005 has been a year of change for the area Catholics: winter brought Bishop Frederick Campbell to Columbus, spring brought Pope Benedict XVI to Rome, and most recently, summer brought Father James Walter, our new pastor, to Lancaster.   Father Walter was born in Columbus on April 25, 1936, to LeRoy and Thelma Rosenberger Walter.   His parents owned an interior decorating business, the Art Wallpaper Co., and then, The Walter Galleries, in downtown Columbus (1933-1972) where he spent a lot of time working when he was young.   As a result, he still maintains a strong interest in interior design.   He attended Catholic elementary and high schools in Columbus, and, after earning his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees, was ordained at St. Joseph Cathedral in Columbus on May 26, 1962.   He is very familiar with our area, because his first assignment after ordination was at St. Mary Church in downtown Lancaster from 1962-1966.   In addition to the regularly assigned St. Mary priests, part-time residents of the Rectory (the only rectory in Lancaster at the time was St. Mark) included Father Bernard Jones, the founding pastor of St. Bernadette, and Monsignor Robert Noon, out fourth pastor.   Now, forty years later, Father Walter is enjoying getting reacquainted with the area and the people of Fairfield County, and he is looking forward to working together with Father Franks at St. Mary and Father Gideon at St. Mark.   During his priesthood, he has served as a high school teacher, hospital chaplain, associate (one of these assignments was at St. Mary, Marion, where he served with Fr. Denis Kigozi), and pastor (most recently at St. John Neumann, Sunbury).
He has worked in fifteen different parishes and lived in eleven - much higher than the average for most priests.   He is very happy to be here in Lancaster; he notes that the Catholic Church has a strong foothold here in Fairfield County.   He points out that in twelve years, we will celebrate the bicentennial of the beginning of the Catholic Church in Lancaster, since the first Mass was celebrated at the Mumaugh Memorial in 1817.   Although Father Walter has been here less than a month, he has already discovered many positive aspects of St. Bernadette parish, including our well-attended teen Masses, our new web site, the subscription rate of 280 families receiving The Catholic Times, Deacon Paul's work with Catholic inmates at the Southeast Correctional Institute, our relationship with our sister parish in El Salvador, our small faith groups, and, above all, our elementary school.   St. Bernadette School now celebrates its fortieth birthday; it provides nurturing and guidance for our children, as well as solid opportunities to pass on the faith and plant the seeds of future vocations.   Father Walter often reflects on Luke 1:46 - "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior&34; and Matthew 14:27 - "Jesus said unto them... be not afraid."   Father Walter has made several changes to the Mass schedule; we can now attend Mass at 8:00 a.m. each Friday and at 9:00 a.m. on the First Saturday of every month.   He will also be available on Saturday mornings (during football season) to hear confessions at 9:30 a.m. (He realizes many parishioners watch the Saturday games!)   He is grateful that God sent him to St. Bernadette, and he is eager to get to know us.   Having inherited a love of the art from his mother, who was an accomplished artist, primarily in water colors, Father plans to spend some of his spare time pursuing his artist talents.   He helped with some aspects of the design of the new St. John Neumann Church in Sunbury and with the arrangement of 75 trees on the property.   This year has indeed been a year of change, But God's love for us is unchanging and His grace is ever present.   Father Walter brings us that reassurance, and we welcome him to St. Bernadette!

Parish Potluck
September 11 After 11:30 Mass

Enjoy Food, Family and Friends!

St. Bernadette Parish Council invites everyone to a Parish Pot Luck taking place on Sunday, September 11, after the 11:30 Mass.   If you have been away this summer, this will provide a chance for you to meet our new pastor, Fr. James Walter.   Each family is invited to bring a main dish [casserole or similar] and one other dish by alphabet: last names A-L bring salads; last names M-Z bring desserts.   Parish Council will supply paper products, ice, and drinks - coffee, iced tea & lemonade.   Council members will be working in the kitchen, so feel free to drop off your dishes in the Parish Hall between Masses, especially if your food needs to be heated or refrigerated.   Come enjoy great food, family and Friends!

Sandy and I want to thank all of the wonderful parishioners, as well as Fr. Walter and Msgr. Noon, for all of the prayers, cards and condolences on the recent passing of my father, L.A. Religious Education Notes

Registration is currently underway for the 2005-2006 Religious Education program.   This program is for all young parishioners in grades K-8 who attend public schools.   Registration information may be obtained at the church or by contacting Ed and Susan Christ at 654-1566.   Classes begin on Sunday, September 11, after the 9:00 A.M. mass.   The Confirmation program includes all parish 8th grade students in grades higher than 8th grade who have not been confirmed are also welcome to attend the classes.   Parents will be contacted closer to the time of the Confirmation program with more details.
There is still a need for more teachers and aides for the coming year.   Please consider whether you may be called as a teacher.   It is a fulfilling, rewarding ministry.   Also, being an aide would be a great service opportunity for any teenager.   Please pray for the parents, students, and teachers involved in the Religious Education program.   Religious education is one of the most important activities of our parish, and every parishioner can be involved through prayer.   Please contact Ed or Susan Christ for questions or to volunteer: 654-1644.

Ministry of Consolation

Ministry of Consolation is a new bereavement group for members of St. Bernadette Church.   This group's purpose is to offer any parishioner, who has lost a loved one, comfort and support.   Our ministry focuses on funeral assistance and after-funeral care with cards, support/social groups, and individual counseling if necessary.   Our goal is to give the bereaved someone to turn to in this difficult time.   We will help them through the funeral and through their grief.   Please contact the church office if your require any of the services of this ministry or would like to volunteer to help in this very important mission.
The church is also available to assist with pre-planning your funeral with the church and local funeral homes.   You may sign up by calling the parish office.

Final Words on the 2005 BAA

The Bishop's Annual Appeal was a great success this year.   Our parish goal was $36,872.   Our parish family made contributions totaling $49,509.
I would like to express my appreciation to Tom and Susan Saddler, Sue Shonk, and Beck Wickham for their dedication and hard work   The BAA is in an eight week long process, with a weekly report made to the diocese, requires team work to make it a success.   Thank-you!

Father Antonio's Visit

Many thanks to all who extended hospitality and generosity to Fr. Antonio during his visit to our parish in June.   He got to know us better; we got to see how our supplies and donations are being used at San Juan Bautista.   Thanks especially to Deacons Mark and Paul and their families, and to all who hosted meals or translated for Father Antonio... and to Jerry Azbell, who took him fishing!   Father Antonio arrived home safely, and he sends us the gratitude and prayers of his parishioners in El Salvador.

Did You Ever Wonder...

Does Our Parish Have A Library?

Yes, St. Bernadette Parish does have a library.   It is located in the cry room, at the back of the church, on the opposite side of the library from the adoration chapel.   It is available for any member of the parish who is interested.   There are a variety of titles covering a number of different topics including the Catholic Church, saints, spirituality, morality, theology, marriage and prayer.
There is always room for more books.   If you have religious or spiritual books on the shelf at home, and you don't think you are likely to read them again, or if there is a book that particularly inspired you and you would like to share it with others, consider donating it to the parish library.   You cab bring it with you to church and put it on the shelf on your way to mass.
At this time, there is no official librarian for our little book corner. If you have been looking for a simple way to offer your service to the parish, this might be the perfect vocation for you.   There is a need for someone to organize and maintain the shelves.   Call the parish office and leave a message for Liz if you are interested.
