COME, WORSHIP THE LORD

September of 2006 will mark the eighteenth year of continuous Eucharistic Adoration at St. Bernadette.   Eucharistic Adoration is the act of worshiping God as He is present in the consecrated Eucharist.   We as Catholics believe that the bread and wine consecrated at Mass become the actual living presence of Jesus.   In our adoration chapel, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for personal prayer and adoration throughout much of the week.   Parishioners and non-parishioners come and spend an hour of their time in the chapel, though not all of 168 hours of the week are filled.   If you have a free hour during the week, why not help reach the goal?   What do you "do" during an hour of adoration?   You can adore and praise God (helpful books are in the chapel)... thank God for His many blessings... talk over your troubles and problems with God... read scripture... pray the Psalms... pray the Rosary... read about and pray with the saints... ask forgiveness... pray for yourself and others... talk to Jesus... listen to Jesus... or just sit quietly and relax in the presence of God.   If you would like more information, contact Dr. James Merk at 654-3255 or call any of the coordinators whose names and phone numbers are listed in the chapel.   This is a small investment of time that pays great dividends!

Did You Ever Wonder...
How A Person Becomes A Saint?

It's not easy to become a saint, especially an official canonized Roman Catholic saint.   The canonization process is a long and complex one, often taking centuries.   Here are the basic steps to sainthood:
  1.   The process may not begin until five years after the candidate has died.   The bishop of the diocese where the person died must start the investigation, forming a diocesan tribunal.   Witnesses are called to attest to the person's life of extraordinary faith, good works and virtue.   At this point, the individual is declared a Servant of God.
  2.   The Acta, a record of the life and virtues of the candidate, is then prepared and submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome.
  3.   Officials there study the individual's entire life, and witnesses are called to give further evidence, if possible.   The priest or lay person who is the chief examiner and presenter is called the "postulator".
  4.   The entire investigation is summed up in the Positio, which is sent to the Vatican.   Theologians examine the Positio first.   If they vote favorably, it is then sent to cardinals and bishops, members of the Congregation.   If their vote favorable, their prefect presents all the results to the Holy Father for his approval.   At this point the candidate is named Venerable.
  5.   Finally, miracles are investigated following strict regulations by religious and scientific authorities.   With one miracle (or martyrdom), the person is beatified and declared Blessed; with two miracles, the individual is canonized and receives the title of Saint.

In the Early centuries of the Church, there was no formal canonization process.   People "became saints" because the faithful knew they had been martyred or had lived very holy lives.   The first formal canonization took place in 993 A.D. with Ulrich of Augsburg.   There are approximately three thousand canonized saints today.   However, only a few were citizens of the United States, including:
  - St. Francis Xavier Cabrini, born in Italy, canonized in 1946; she lived from 1850-1917 and founded an order of sisters who work tirelessly among American immigrants; she became a naturalized American citizen in 1909 and died in Chicago.
  - St. Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton, born in New York City, canonized in 1975; she lived from 1774-1821 and was a convert to Catholicism; she founded an order of sisters and in essence began the American Catholic elementary school system.
  - St. John Nepomucene Neumann, born in Bohemia, canonized in 1977; he lived from 1811-1860 and served as a missionary diocesan priest in New York state, eventually becoming a naturalized American citizen and the fourth bishop of Philadelphia.
  - St. Katherine Drexel, born in Philadelphia, canonized in 2000; she lived from 1858-1955 and was born into an extremely wealthy family; she founded an order of sisters and used her twenty million dollar fortune to help black and native Americans.

A few U.S. citizens are on the road to sainthood at this time.   These include, among others, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha born in upstate New York, Venerable Solanus Casey born in Wisconsin, and Servant of God Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen born in Illinois.   The saints are guides and intercessors for us.   As the Church prays on All Saints' Day: "Father, all-powerful and ever-lasting God, today we rejoice in the holy men and women of every time and place.   May their prayers bring us your forgiveness and love."

Summer Reading Suggestions

1.   The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.   This seven volume saga starts with the famous tale, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.   A great choice for family reading, can be enjoyed by children in grade school, high school, and adults

2.   The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein.   Tolkein, a contemporary of C.S. Lewis, was a practicing Catholic.   His trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, and its prelude, The Hobbit, is set in a world entirely formed in his imagination, with amazing creatures, vivid landscapes, thrilling adventures, and even its own language.   These books are more appropriate for ages 10 and up.

Both of these series are available at the public library, local bookstores, and on the internet.
