Religious Education Corner

This fall, the religious education program at St. Bernadette's has a new name and a new director.   Deacon Mark Scarpitti has accepted the position of Director of the Parish School of Religion, replacing Ed Christ.   "Parish School of Religion" or PSR is the official diocesan name for the Sunday morning religious education program for youth attending public, secular private, or home schools.   The St. Bernadette PSR is open to all students in grades K-8.   The PSR also has the parish confirmation class for all eighth grade students, including those in parochial school.

Registration for the PSR 2006 will be the weekends of August 19/20 and 26/27 after all weekend masses.

The first event for the 2007 confirmation class will be the Enrollment Mass to be held at 9 A.M. on November 19, 2006.   All eighth grade parishioners and their parents should plan on attending the mass and an information meeting immediately following the mass.

The PSR is in need of additional teachers and aides for the coming year.   The training of young parishioners in the content and practice of the faith is one of the most important ministries of any parish.   If you are a confirmed Catholic, please prayerfully consider if you are being called to this ministry.   It is an opportunity for you to grow in your own faith, while helping to bring the fullness of the faith to young people.   Any individual interested in teaching must first have a background check and complete a 1/2 day class called Protecting God's Children.   The Fairfield County Sheriff's office is the most convenient location for the background check.   You can register for the PGC course at virtus.org.

If you are interested in teaching, call Deacon Mark Scarpitti at 468-1042.

R.C.I.A. - A Journey in Faith

As fall approaches, the R.C.I.A. program is soon to begin.   The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is the process through which adults, non-baptized and those baptized in other faiths, become full members of the Catholic Church.   Inspired by the early church's practice of initiating adults, the RCIA process calls the entire community to assume the responsibility for initiating new members.

In the early Church, people interested in becoming Christian were invited to join the community through a step-by-step process of information, instruction and testing.   A person's coming to faith - or conversion to Christianity - was looked upon as a total community involvement.

Here at St. Bernadette's there are a variety of ways for parishioners to become directly involved in R.C.I.A. including the ministries of sponsor, catechist, witness, and prayer partner.

Please consider inviting a non-Catholic family member and friends to attend an informal information meeting.   The next meeting will be held during the "coffee and donuts" after the 9 A.M. mass on August 27th.   The weekly R.C.I.A. sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings, beginning on September 13, from 7:00-8:30 P.M. in the Mary Good Center multi-purpose room.

If you would like to be involved in the R.C.I.A process, please call Teresa Scarpitti at 468-1042.

Did You Ever Wonder...
About the Dominicans?

Sister Nancy Ames, O.P. joins our parish staff this month as a part-time Pastoral Associate.   She grew up in Lancaster and joined the Dominican order after graduating from high school.   More of her story will be featured in our next newsletter, but first we will take a brief look at her order by tracing the history of the Dominicans in Lancaster and central Ohio.

Almost 200 years ago, Father Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P., a missionary priest in Kentucky, was asked by his friend, Bishop John Carroll in Maryland, to see if a Dominican mission might be established in Ohio.   His journey in 1808 came at the request of Jacob Dittoe, a German farmer, whose family had settled near Somerset, along with the families of John and Joseph Fink.   The priest agreed to stay at the desolate outpost, and so, ten years later, the first Catholic church in Ohio, St. Joseph near Somerset, was dedicated by Father Fenwick and his nephew Father Nicholas Dominic Young, O.P.   Two years later, in 1820, Father Young traveled to Lancaster to dedicate the first St. Mary' Church, located on Chestnut Street near present day Memorial Drive.   For the next two decades, St. Mary's was served either by Dominican missionaries from the Somerset monastery or by resident Dominican priests.   The last of these was the very same Father Nicholas Young; after he left in 1839, the parish was served by diocesan priests, as it still is today.   The original little chapel was eventually replaced by a larger building in a more central location in 1841, and soon a small school with one classroom was started, with Neal and Eliza Gillespie as teachers for all the children.   In the meantime, the Somerset parishioners had established their own school in 1830 which was staffed by Dominican sisters.
The third (current) St. Mary Church was completed in 1864.   In 1872, Bishop Rosecrans and Father DeCailly, the pastor of St. Mary's, sent a request to St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus for Dominican sisters to staff the growing elementary school in Lancaster.   Five teachers were sent, including the superior, Sister Catherine Brown, and Sisters Francis, Raymond, Mary Joseph, and Gertrude.   Their school and residence was located at the corner pf High and Chestnut Streets.   In 1891, a high school department was started, and the first class of ten students graduated three years later.   Enrollment and staff continued to grow; at one point in time some of the sisters moved to the Trout House on Pearl Street, sharing space with a family of mice!   By 1850, in their newly enlarged and redecorated convent, twenty-one sisters taught a peak enrollment of 991 students; Dominicans taught Lancaster students through the years at St. Mary Elementary, St. Mary High School, Bishop Fenwick High School and William V. Fisher Catholic High School.
The third (current) St. Mary Church was established St. Bernadette Church on Lancaster's east side on Easter Sunday, April 18, 1965.   St. Bernadette School opened for second and third grade students on September 6 of the same year, with the help of two Dominican sisters on loan from St. Mary's faculty.   By the following September, St. Bernadette School was ready to welcome students in grades one through four.   In 1967, the Franciscan Sisters of Stella Niagara, New York, formally accepted the invitation of our pastor, Father Bernard Jones, to staff the school.   Three Franciscan sisters began teaching all six grades in the fall of 1967, with gratitude to the Dominicans for their help and support.
Over the years, almost forty Lancaster natives have joined the Dominican sisters, and over 300 Dominican sisters have served the Catholics of Lancaster since 1972.   In the next issue of Parish Notes, we will focus on Sister Nancy Ames, O.P., other Dominicans currently serving in Lancaster, and even St. Dominic himself!   In addition, the significance of those mysterious letters - O.P. - will also be revealed!
Thanks to Sister Mary Cecil, O.P. for help with this article

Teen-Led Mass Returns!

October 29,2006
9:00 A.M.

The first St. Bernadette Teen-Led Mass of the 06/07 school year will be on Sunday, October 29, at 9 A.M.   This is the fourth year for the teen-led mass, and it is loved by parishioners of all ages.
There are several openings for new teen ministers.   Below is a description of each ministry and the requirements for participation.

Usher:   As minister of hospitality, the usher greets his or her fellow parishioners as they enter the sanctuary.   They take up the collection and assist with the presentation of the gifts.   At the end of mass, they distribute bulletins.   All parishioners in grades 8-12 are eligible for this ministry.

Lector:   The lector proclaims the Word of God from the Ambo.   He or she must have the ability to read with clarity and proper inflection.   The readings must be prepared and meditated upon prior to being practiced with Dave Shonk, coordinator of parish lectors.   Only confirmed parishioners in grades 9-12 are eligible.

Music Ministry:   The Teen-Led Mass Contemporary Band has openings for 2 singers, male or female, and a variety of instrumentalists.   Admittance to the group requires a meeting with Liz Latorre, music minister.   Participation in the Band requires 2-4 rehearsals prior to each mass, depending upon the amount of new music.

Minister of Communion:   A minister of Communion has the sacred responsibility of handling and distributing the Precious Body and Blood of Christ.   This is a position for spiritually mature, confirmed parishioners in grades 9-12.   Anyone interested must complete a training session and be commissioned by the bishop.

If you are interested in any of these ministry areas for the teen-led mass, please contact Liz Latorre, 653-8120 or lizlatorre@esagelink.com
