Fun in the Sun

Parish Picnic on June 24
After the 10:30 Mass

The last Sunday in June has been chosen for a parish picnic - an opportunity to enjoy fellowship with your own family as well as your church family.   There will be food, fun, and entertainment!   We will begin our meal with a prayer at 12 noon.   Hamburgers and hot dogs are provided, but each family is asked to bring a potluck dish, as well as your own table service and tablecloth.
Mike Wood will entertain us with his voice and guitar.   He will perform selections that span many generations.   Following Mike, the expressive sign team will perform several songs.
Following the meal and entertainment, enjoy family games and a bounce house brought to us by Lancaster Country Club.   There will be white elephant bingo in the parish hall: bring gently used items, new items or even baked goods to participate.
The picnic will be under tents in the back of the parish hall, in the field behind the garage.   If the weather is not cooperative, it will be a potluck meal in the parish hall.   Volunteers are needed for bounce house, set up and tear down.   Please contact Ginny Frank at 503-8484.

Father Walter
Celebrates
Anniversary

On Pentecost Sunday, May 27, 2007, a reception was held in the social hall honoring Father James Walter on the 45th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood.
Fr. Walter was ordained at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Columbus on May 26, 1962.   His first assignment was at St. Mary Church in downtown Lancaster, and after years of service throughout the diocese, he returned to Lancaster as pastor of St. Bernadette.
A display of memorabilia highlighted his life and his many assignments over the years as teacher, hospital chaplain, associate, and pastor.
Family and friends from out-of-town joined St. Bernadette parishioners in celebrating Father's anniversary and in praying for vocations: "Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the Earth!"

Eagle Scout Project

Jeremy Yenrick is working on an Eagle Scout Project to place a four foot tall statue of the boy Jesus (approximately 12 years old) in the lawn area in front of the school.   Father Walter helped him select this project and parish council has endorsed it.
The total cost of this project is estimated at $1800.   This amount covers the statue, base, and electric.   Jeremy is currently seeking donations to offset the amount.   Checks may be made payable to St. Bernadette Church.   Your generosity is appreciated.

Vacation Bible School

St. Mark will be having their summer Vacation Bible School program on August 6-10.   The exact time is to be announced.   Call the St. Mark Parish Office for details: 653-1229.

A Thought From:
St. Therese of Lisieux

"Be like a child ... practice all the virtues and so always lift up your little foot to mount the ladder of holiness, but do not imagine that you will be able to ascend even the first step.   No!   The good Lord does not demand more from you than your good will.   From the top of the stairs, he looks at you with love.   Very soon, won over by your useless efforts, he will come down and take you in his arms.   He will carry you up.   But if you stop lifting your little foot, he will leave you a long time on the ground."

Did You Ever Wonder ...
what is the Prayer shawl ministry?

The prayer shawl ministry is a ministry of encouragement.   Members of this ministry knit or crochet shawls for those members of our faith community who are bereaved, ill or in nursing homes.   It is a special way to let these people know that we are as a community are praying for them and/or their loved ones.

The person creating the shawl prayers over it as it is being made.   When given to an individual in a difficult time, the person has something physical to hold, touch and warm them.

If you or someone you know is interested on making shawls, please visit the Mary Good Center building for directions and yarn.   You may also call the church if you know anyone who would benefit from these shawls.   Donations of yarn are also very much appreciated - drop them in the bin in the office building.   Please contact Ginny Frank for more information at 503-8484.

Father Jose Lira From Our Sister Parish
San Juan Bautista in Nahuizalco, El Salvador

El Salvador is a country in Central America with Fertile soil, Pacific beaches, and exports of coffee, sugar, and shrimp.   However, it is plagued by volcanoes and earthquakes, and its devastating Civil War, which lasted from 1980 to 1992, resulted in the deaths of over seventy thousand people.   El Salvador is a land of martyrs: Archbishop Oscar Romero and four American church women were murdered in 1989.   Currently, nearly seven million people reside in this country about the size of Vermont.

Yet El Salvador (which in English means "The Savior") is also the land of hope. St. Bernadette Parish has been assisting in El Salvador in various ways for over a decade.   In 2001, a group of our parishioners actually visited our sister parish of San Juan Bautista in Nahuizalco.   In 2003, we shipped one and one-half semi truck loads of clothing, furniture, and supplies, including a car to San Juan.   Over the years, we have hosted several pastors and held "fiestas" to help finance church renovations, rebuild homes, and sustain the school, the seminary, health clinics, and agricultural programs.

Recently, the newest pastor of our sister parish, Father Jose Reynaldo Lira, was able to visit with us for a week in May.   Padre Jose concelebrated daily Masses with Father Walter, and he spoke at the Pentecost Masses (through translator Deacon Paul DeShaies), expressing his gratitude to the parishioners of St. Bernadette for their ongoing support of his very poor parish.   He brought many photographs, which are displayed on the bulletin board in the back of church.   Padre Lira was able to visit Lancaster and beyond, from Hocking Hills to St. Joseph Cathedral in Columbus.   He won't soon forget his fishing trip or the games of Dominoes!   Many thanks to all who extended hospitality, acted as translators, and helped make his stay with us a memorable one.   We now have envelopes marked "St. John the Baptist" in our Offertory Packets for monetary donations.   With these offerings and our prayers, we can give Padre Jose and his parishioners additional reasons for hope.
