Lazarus Committee
For over twenty-five years, the Lazarus Ministry has been
active at St. Bernadette Parish. The purpose of this ministry is to
provide concrete support for grieving families upon the death of a St.
Bernadette parishioner, and it is available to every family in the parish.
The chief service of our volunteers is to provide a meal
after the funeral mass by purchasing, preparing, and serving food at no cost
to the family of the deceased. The meal is usually held in the Social
Hall. Upon hearing of the death of a parishioner, any volunteer is
welcome to call me, instead of waiting to be called to help. I would
also like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to all of the
volunteers who have so graciously given of their talent to the Lazarus
Ministry over the years. They have provided important help at a critical
time for so many of our parish families. If you desire to volunteer
in this ministry, please call 653-5445 for more information.
In his service and love,
Dolores Defillippo - Chairperson

Fall Fun for Folks of All Ages
Mark your calendar for the St. Bernadette Home and School
Association's Annual Fall Harvest Celebration on the evening of Friday,
October 26.
This is one of our parish school's largest fundraisers
of the year and is a great social event for families of all shapes and
sizes. Past Fall Harvest events have included a "haunted
hallway", crafts, dinner, and dancing.
Parishioners of all ages are encouraged to attend this
year's event. In addition to an evening of fun and fellowship,
you walk away with the knowledge that you have contributed to one of our
parish's most important ministries.
Watch the school hallway and the parish bulletin for the
specifics of this year's event. We hope to see you there!

2007 Soubirous Award Winners
Recipients of this year's Soubirous Award for service
to parish and community are Mrs. Betty Shonebarger and Mr. and Mrs. Rob
Yarmesch.
Betty raised four children and taught math for many years
in both the Catholic and Lancaster City School systems. She is a former
Minister of Holy Communion and she has been an active Catholic presence in
the community supporting both civic and church projects. Now living at
Lanfair, she reaches out to the Catholic population there through personal
contact and activities such as Masses, weekly Rosary, and Stations of the
Cross during Lent.
Rob and Darlene Yarmesch are the parents of three
sons. Rob works in the food service industry, coaches, and is a member
of the Knights of Columbus. Darlene works for the IRS and has been very
active in fund-raising for both Lancaster schools and the Catholic church and
school community. She has served on parish council, organized several
church celebrations, and taught the PSR classes. Both Rob and Darlene
are also active in sacramental outreach, serving as Ministers of Holy
Communion at church and at Lanfair. Thanks and congratulations to
these parishioners!

The St. Bernadette PSR is for all students, grades K-8,
who attend public schools. PSR also conducts the confirmation classes
for all 8th grade students, in public and parochial school. Classes
are held on Sunday mornings from 10:15-11:15 throughout the school year. The
first class is to be held on Sunday, September 9. If your student is

RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
The new RCIA inquiry class will begin on Wednesday,
September 12. It will be from 7-9 PM in the Mary Good Center
multi-purpose room.
RCIA is the process in which a teenager or adult becomes
a full member of the Catholic Church. It is appropriate for unbaptized,
those baptized in other Christian faiths, and those baptized Catholic who did
not complete the other sacraments of initiation: First Communion and
Conformation.
The first six weeks is a period of inquiry in which the
participants learn more about the Catholic Faith and discern if they would
like to begin the formal process of formation with the Rite of Acceptance and
culminating in their reception into the Church at Easter Vigil. Following
Easter Vigil, the class then enters a period of further and formation called
Mystagogy.
Please contact Teresa Scarpitti at 740-468-1042 if you,
a friend, or loved one would be interested in learning more about the
Catholic Faith.

New Eagle Scout Sends his Thanks
I would like to thank everyone who helped with my Eagle
Project.
Thanks to Fr. Walter for giving me the opportunity to make
this lasting contribution to St. Bernadette Church and School.
The landscape around the statue of Jesus in His Youth was
done with the help of scouts and adults from St. Mary's Troop 141.
Thanks to Ed Shaw for donating the sandstone rock that
Jesus stands on.
Thanks to Thomas Schmelzer for helping with all the
preparation for setting the stone, getting it off truck, and putting the
stone in place.
Thank you to C. E. Schmelzer Electronic for donating and
installing the lighting.
A special thanks to everyone who donated money for the
cost of this project. I appreciate the support I received to finish
this project and to be able to complete my Eagle Scout requirements. I
hope everyone will enjoy the statue for many years to come.

A Pearl of Great Price
by Sister Nancy Ames, O.P.
The following reflection is an excerpt of a vocations article written by
Sr. Nancy and reissued on the 40th anniversary of her religious profession.
A Christian has a responsibility, by virtue of Baptism,
to respond to his or her call to holiness. How we live our lives in
this world, and by what values, is the challenge we face when determining
our way, My own story is anything but dramatic. I was a mere
18 years old, and certainly lacked any understanding of "all that
religious life entailed," but something kept plugging away inside me to
risk the unknown.
...I could have made other choices, but this life-style calls
me from my deepest sense of passion and commitment to God and God's
people. For me, it's an ongoing adventure shared with the many
people I meet.
Living the vowed life... has given me availability. It
has freed me for service to others and given me the time and space necessary
to establish an intimate relationship with my God. I life this reality. My
response throughout the years has been one of total gratitude. The many
places I've been, and the many people who have entered my life, have left
an indelible impression. I believe in God's master plan: that God
moves people in and out of each other's lives so that they leave marks on
each other. I've found that I am made up of these bits and pieces
of all those who have touched my life. I am more because of them, and
I would be less if they had not marked me. This kaleidoscope of
touches represents God's mysterious and unfathomable love.
The parable of the pearl of great price, told by Jesus,
points to a wonderful experience of living life in abundance. The abundance
is not found by the achievement of wealth, power, happiness and prestige. We
recognize the great pearl when we are enamored of life itself, when we let
go our insecurities and let our freedom and risks take us to unlimited
possibilities. When we finally see that we have nothing to lose, we
will risk the safe and the comfortable. We will let go of all those
things that do not enrich (but rather tie us down), and we will let go of
that one final truth which we thought was ours: that our life is our own!
I am privileged to live "life in abundance." Take
a few risks, trust deeply, go seek for the pearl, and God will give back a
200 times more.
I ask myself what kind of Good News do I reflect to
others? Is my Good News shown in the quality of how I live my life,
in the passion I bring to another in shared presence, in the love I offer
to those least likely? If I am enamored of life, it will show in
everything U do, everything I say. It will show in my attitudes,
in my values, in my relationships, and, most of all, in my live.
When people begin to seek our company, when they
ask who we are, then we, the people of the Good News, can tell our
stories, We can show others that it is possible to say,
"Our Father..."

Jillians Dinner: A Call for
Nominations
Saturday, October 20, 2007, will mark the 7th
annual Jillian's Dinner to be held at St. Bernadette Parish. Jillian
Davidson was a young parishioner who passed away in 2000. She touched
many people in her short life, and it was her desire to help others the way
they helped her and her family throughout her illness. Jillian's
Dinner is an extension of her dream; it raises funds to assist an individual
or family who has experienced a catastrophic illness, the loss of a loved
one, or other major adversity.
If you would like to nominate someone who might benefit
from Jillian's Dinner, or for more information, please call Kathy
Wagner at 687--5-4 or Marlene Clark at 687-5709. All nominations and
information will remain confidential. Thank You.
