Parish Directory

St. Bernadette Parish is in the process of producing a new parish photo directory.   The last directory was published in 2003.   There are many new families in the parish and many of the younger members have changed significantly in the past five years.
The next photo session for the parish directory is being held during the first week in October, from Wednesday, October 1 through Saturday, October 4.   Please check the parish web site www.stbparish.org, or call the parish office for information or to make an appointment.   There is no cost to have your picture taken; however, it is possible to purchase additional pictures if you desire.
Please make time for your household to be included in the directory.   The photo directory is an invaluable tool for building community in the parish - and you will be able to match names to all those faces you see each week!

2008 Soubirous
Award Winner

Rosemary Mock

Congratulations to the winner of the St. Bernadette Soubirous Award for 2008, Mrs. Rosemary Mock.   As stated in the nomination letter:  "Rosemary Mock is one of the many quiet yet consistent volunteers of St. Bernadette Parish.   She works behind the scenes using her gifts of organization and skills in cooking and meal planning to bring the good people of St. Bernadette Parish together.   On several occasions, Rosemary has recued us by planning, shopping, cooking, and serving meals on very short notice.   When I think of the efforts of Rosemary Mock, I am reminded of Martha and Mary from Luke's Gospel.   Rosemary, like Martha, works hard so tha tthe rest of us can enjoy the words and works of Christ.   She gives generously of her time and talents to meet the needs of our Parish."

One of St. Bernadette's
Own Answers
God's Call

One of God's greatest gifts is revealing to us our place, our vovation, in life.   For one of our St. Bernadette parishioners, Lauren Turner, age 22, this particular gift has resulted in her moving across the country tio fulfill her role in God's plan.   This month she begins her life as a candidate of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles.   Lauren credits her parents, her years of formation at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, her associations with Carmelite Sisters, her close spiritual friends, and her prayer and listening to the Lord in silence, as sources of love and support in enabling her to answer God's call.   When asked how a how woman today could leave the world behind to serve the Lord, she replied, "When you give everything up to serve and love Him, He gives it all back to you 100 fold in ways that you can not even imagine.   He is constantly showering us with his gifts of love."   If you missed "Jottings from Sister Nancy" featuring Lauren's testimony in the Sunday bulletin, copies (blue pages) are still available in the church bookracks.   If you would like to learn more about Lauren, her vocation story with photos, Lauren Turner:  Discerning the Call to Serve God as a Religious Sister, can be found at www.seekholiness.com/html/vocations/Lauren%20Turner.html.

Did You Ever Wonder... About Pope Trivia

The most commonly used name is John (23 times), followed by Gregory (16 times) and Benedict (16 times); 43 names were used only once.   Only 2 Popes have taken two names: John Paul I and John Paul II.

Ages of Popes

The oldest Pope was Adrian I (772 AD), elected at age 80 years of age.   The youngest was Benedict IX (1032 AD) at 12 years of age, though many believe that he was probably closer to 20 years old when he assumed the papacy.

Other Points of Interest

  • 81 Popes have been canonized and 8 have been beatified.
  • The longest pontificate was Pius IX (1846 - 1878 AD) 32 years
  • The Pope earns no salary and has no bank account
  • The Pope's car is called the Popemobile.   There are at least 20 Popemobiles scattered around the world.   Land Rover made the first armored Popemobile in 1982, after the assassination attempt of Pope John Paul II.   They have since been made by Fiat, Renault, Peugeot, GM, Toyota and Mercedes Benz.

Spiritual Life

The St. Bernadette Spiritual Life Committee announces a new series of adult education opportunities beginning this September.   These Thursday evening Spiritual Life Programs will consist of a different topic each month.
The topic for Sptember, The Enneagram, will be presented in the multipurpose room of the Mary Good Center on Thursday, September 18, at 7:00 p.m.   Other topics throughout the year may include: Communication, Spiritual Direction, Holy Humor, Labyrinths, God's Will in Our Lives, and evenings of prayer or book discussions.   Watch the bulletin for further details.   All are welcome.

Scripture Study

Beginning this fall, Sister Nancy's Scripture Study, which has always been offered on Tuesday mornings, will now take place on Tuesday evenings as well.   This will enable more parishioners to have the opportunity to gather to study the Word of God with companionship and the good guidance of Sr. Nancy.
Scripture Study will be held in the Mary Good Center every Tuesday from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. and from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. to discuss the readings which will be heard at Mass the following Sunday.   This is an excellent way to enrich and share faith by focusing on God's Word.

Home and School Notes

It's Earning for Learning at River Valley Mall!   This is a great way the whole parish can help the school raise money.   Between now and September 30, every dollar you spend in mall stores, at the food court, or at the movies will earn points for the school.   Just take your receipts to the mall office and have them stamped for St. Bernadette.   Or, you can turn in your receipts to the box in the school entryway, and they will be taken to the mall (please note that receipts turned into the box at school will not be returned).   The goal is to win the first prize of $5,000!!   Let's help keep St. Bernadette strong: A School We Can Bee-lieve In!!!   (Turn in receipts on Monday to double your points!!!)

Fall Harvest is back: October 31 at 6 p.m.   This is one of our praish school's major yearly social events.   It is a great evening for the families of our parish with a haunted hallway, dinner, and dancing.   Watch the bulletin board in the school entrance for more information!

Jillian's Dinner: A Call for Nominations

Saturday, October 25, 2008, will mark the 8th annual Jillian's Dinner o be held at St. Bernadette Parish.   Jillian Davidson was a young parishioner who passed away in 2000.   She touched many people in her short life, and it was her desire to help others the way they helped her and her family during her illness.   Jillian's Dinner is an extension of her dream; it raises funds to assist an individual or family who has experienced a catastrophic illness, the loss of a loved one, or other major adversity.   If you would like to nominate someone who might benefit from Jillian's Dinner, or for more information, please call Kathy Wagner at 687-0504 or Marlene Clark at 687-5709.   All nominations will remain confidential.   During the dinner in recent years, a raffle has been held in the lobby which generates even more funds.   If you have an item that you would like to donate for the raffle, please contact either Kathy or Marlene by October 15.   Thank you.
