Organ Concert
And Dedication

On Sunday, April 13, 2008, our parish's new Allen QL225 digital organ was dedicated by Fr. James Walter and played in concert by Mr. Charles Yanarella of Pickerington.   He was assisted by J. D. Latorre on trumpet, and Liz Latorre, soprano.   The event was attended by 200 people from our parish and the Lancaster community
The concert featured traditional hymns sung by the audience, as well as a wide variety of organ repertoire including pieces by Couperin, Faure, Mouret, and the famous Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by J. S. Bach.   J. D. Latorre played pieces on both the trumpet and piccolo trumpet.   Liza Latorre sang Offertory composed by John Ness Beck, a native of central Ohio
The convert was followed by a formal reception featuring wine, hors d'oevres, desserts, and fresh flower arrangements provided by members of our parish community.

Spiritual Beach
Reading

Looking for a great read for the beach or for just sitting out on your deck?   Check out the "Christ the Lord" series by Anne Rice.
Ms. Rice, previously best known for The Vampire Chronicles, experienced a re-conversion to the Catholic faith in 2002, following the death of her husband.   Christ The Lord, Out of Egypt is the first installment in a fictional series based on the life of Christ.   It begins while the Holy Family is in exile in Egypt and ends after the finding at the temple.
The second book in the series, Christ the Lord, the Road to Cana, explores the "lost, young adulthood" of Jesus, and culminates in the miracle at Cana.
These books have received rave reviews by both secular and Christian periodicals, including Publishers Weekly and America.   The books are available at the Fairfield County District Library.

The Relevance of Lourdes
in Today's World

As part of the 150th anniversary of Mary's appearances to St. Bernadette, the Bishops of Lourdes, Bishop Jacques Perrier, has identified twelve missions of the Church in which Lourdes can play a particular role.   These twelve missions also apply to our Church in the United States and throughout the world.   He enumerates and identifies them in the light of particular Gospel passages.

1)   The Sick - Matthew 25: 36
"I was sick and you visited me."   "Lord, when did we visit you when you were sick?"   "The Lord will answer them, 'I assure you, as often as you did it for the least of my brothers, you did it for me.'"
*   How can you help the sick and tend to Jesus in His wounds today?

2)   The Disabled - John 9: 1
"He saw a man who was born blind."   I am the light of the world."
*   At times, a handicap is even more frightening than illness.   What are our fears and our personal experiences about this subject?

3)   The Young People - Luke 7: 14
"'Young man, I tell you, get up.'   The dead man sat up and began to speak.   Then Jesus gave him back to his mother."
*   What role can we play in announcing the gospel to the youth of today?

4)   Marian Spirituality - John 19: 27
"'Behold your Mother.'   From that hour onward, the disciple took her in his care."
*   What role does Mary have in your life?   How well do we know her?

5)   The Holy Eucharist - John 6: 35
"I am the bread of life.   No one who comes to me shall ever be hungry."
*   What is the connection for us between Mary and the Eucharist, and between the Eucharist and serving our neighbor?

6)   The Marginalized - Mark 10: 46
"He saw a man sitting by the roadside.   He called out to him, 'Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.'"
*   When He chose Bernadette, God confirmed the word of the beatitudes: "Blessed are the poor, for theirs is the kingdom of God."   Who are the "Beatitudes" of today in the corner where we live?

7)   Ecumenism - John 17: 21
"That they may all be one, so that the world may believe."
*   All Christians love and venerate Mary under various titles.   How could we be listeners to non-Catholics on their thoughts about Mary?

8)   Peace - Luke 2: 14
"Peace to all men of good will."
*   The laying down of weapons is not the only form of peace.   Forgiveness, interior reconciliation, harmony in search of the common good, are other facets of peace invisibly present in Lourdes.

9)   Reconciliation - Matthew 3: 2
"Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His path."
*   People say that our time "has lost sense of sin".   But what is sin?   What positive value can we give to penance?

10)   Inter-religions - Matthew 25: 32
"All nations will be gathered before him."
*   Why is an inter-religious meeting so important today?

11)   Lourdes: Cross-roads of the World - Revelation 7: 9
"People of every race, language and nation."
*   How do we see the role of the Church in the face of globalization?

12)   The Volunteer Helpers - Matthew 20: 28
"Not to be served but to serve."
*   People say that when serving others, more is received than is given.   Recall how this has been a reality for you.

Prayer During
Vacation Time

Heavenly father, you have mercifully allowed human beings to have periods of rest and recuperation on our journey through life.   This is my period of rest this year - my vacation from the usual cares of everyday life and my time to be renewed - physically, mentally, and spiritually.   Grant that this vacation will bring me a new awareness of the good things in life, increased knowledge of your wondrous creativity, delightful travel through fascinating places, and genuine leisure for revitalization.   And bring me back to carry out my daily tasks with cheerfulness and goodwill, and to the best of my strength and ability.   Amen.

If you will be vacationing within the United States this summer and would like to attend mass, connect to www.masstimes.org
or call 1-800-MASS-TIMES   (1-800-627-7846).

A Summer Prayer

Long warm days...

The pace of life slows...

A time for picnics and rest in the shade...

Lord, help me to rest
awhile in the cooling shade
of your presence.

Slow down my restless heart
and fill me with gentle
compassion for all your people.

Amen.
