Why pray to the Saints in heaven? No
one would say it is wrong to ask friends to pray for you. The
saints in heaven are also our friends. When we pray to them,
we are not asking that they give us some blessing. No, we
are only asking them to pray for us. But should you not
pray for yourself? Of course, but all would agree that
being joined in prayer of others is desirable. Finally,
if such prayer by the saints in heaven is God's will, who can
object? It is the Catholic Church's teaching that it
indeed is God's will. The saints in heaven contemplate
God, praise Him, and constantly care for those whom they left on
earth. "When they entered the joy of their Master, they
were 'put in charge of many things'." - The Catechism of
the Catholic Church p. 645. See Matt. 25:21.
At St. Bernadette Catholic Church we
especially seek the prayers of St. Bernadette Soubirous for whom
our parish is named. *
